Front Lockright on ifs-How is it?

Front Lockright on ifs-How is it?

I want to put a front locker on my 89 4runner and Im leaning toward the powertrax lockright because its cheap and easy to install with no special tools (I think?). So has anyone out there used this setup? Installed it themselves? What do you think about that for a front IFS that sees weekend offroading? Any feedback would be great. Thanks

I have a lockrite in the front of mine and it is awesime. It does get super hard to turn when the hubs are locked in 4wd, but imo worth it if u cant afford a selectable. I bought the diff already assembled. I have wheeled this set-up a few times and definately reccomend it.

I've got an Aussie in my IFS diff. It's great! On the street (2wd) it is obviously transparent. On the trail, I notice no negative effects. Turning is just as easy as ever, and it climbs great! I do notice that when coming out of a turn, when I remove my hand from the wheel, it straightens itself out real fast.

Thanks for the replies. So if I have my hubs unlocked and its not in 4wd, I wouldnt notice a locker in the front at all right? I think Im gonna go with the Lock Right.

Please don't use 4wd in the snow then.

I've tried it with my front ARB. i just about crapped my pants. Kinda neat when you have the wheels cranked FULL left and the truck is driving straight.

I love my front Lockright. It is so amazing. Some of the areas that would swallow my truck aren't so hard anymore. I have the Lockright for the rear to put in too but haven't gotten to that.

The steering is a little stiff and the thing follows the crown in the trails but otherwise I can't believe how much of an improvement its been. Someone once said that a rear locker will be a 70% improvement in traction so I can't wait to get my rear one in. Oh yeah, lockers suck in the snow but I live in the desert so I don't get a lot of that.

Thanks Ike. I didnt even think of that. I am gonna need this thing to work in the snow. Whats best for snow then - open or LSD?

Save up for a selectable if you are going to need it in snow then you will want to go selectable.

I have a aussie front and rear. If tou are in 2wd with the hubs unlocked the front diff will not even spin so no different driving there. As far as trail I love it! It can be a little harder to turn but you will learn how to drive it. I can still take my truck down 4 wheeler trails np. I have not had my lockers for the winter but in my old truck (K5 blazer) I had a mini-spool in the front and I just left one hub unlocked in the winter when I used it on the road. Thats just what I did. Bill

Open would be best, but LSD will be okay. The problem is, snow fools auto lockers and LSDs into locking up inappropriately. LSD's less so, but it can still happen.

One hub unlocked is probably okay. That simulates an open diff. I wouldn't but i don't see any harm in it. Sounds like it worked for onefast66nova. Maybe PM him and ask him if he had and other issues with it.

Ummmm, not exactly Isaac. I had to do this once to get off the trail. It pulls like CRAZY to the one side. Honestly, I don't know what would be worse - not being able to turn or being pulled off the road or into oncoming traffic.

If you live where it snows, you need to be able to have open diffs IMHO.

+1 on the lock-rite...............I never had issues turning, when you do it right the locker disengages so turning is easier. But when locked, yeah it can be hard. Selectables will still be difficult to turn because they're still locked no matter what.

Mine never pulled to one side with one hub unlocked. It was the same as an open diff where as only one tire pulls. If you are cautious in the winter and not driving like a crazy person you should be ok. I drove my 05 gto with over 400 hp a few times in the winter only cause I had too and the rear was locked on it. If I gave it a lot of skinny pedal yes it would try and come around, but if I took it easy everything was a ok. Thats my .02. Bill
