Hello,
I am trying to get front rotors off the 4runner, and am having difficulty. Automatic hubs are off - used info found here, thanks! Now, I have the snap ring and washer off the end of the axle, but am confronted by some sort of brass "nut" that is not the hex nut that is mentioned in the DIY articles anywhere I find. Except for one small flat side, it is round with little notches in it. Pic:

There is also some sort of spring dealio in there, too, that has hooks on each of the ends reaching into the center towards the axle.

How do you get the brass nut out, and what does the spring do, and do I need to remove the spring, too?

Wipe away the grease inside the axle tube. The only nut(s) in there should be the 2 big ones that hold/preload the bearings. Any washer or spacer type shim should be removeable by just pulling gently on the outer edges but not necessarily needing removal. The 2 big nuts should go right over these washers/shims.
After the grease is out of the way you should be able to see some bendable ears with one ear laying on one of the flats of the outer nut and one on the inner nut. This is beant to be bendable as a keeper.

Hi desert,
I cleaned it out, bit there are no nuts available. According to the exploded view in my Chilton's, it apears that I still have part of the Auto hub on the end of the axle. I have the Auto hub casing off (part held on by cone washers), but according to the diagram, their is an inner piece to the hub, and that is what is still on the end of the axle/hub assembly. I have taken the spring out (clutch spring?), but it didn't do anything to aid removal of the brass ring/retainer, so I reinstalled it. The spring had to be oriented just right to get the Auto hub case back on properly (I just test fit it, but didn't bolt it back on).

How do you get this second chunk of the Auto hub off so i can access the 54MM axle nuts holding the hub/rotor on?

I figured it out...

Large wire/snap ring around outside of inner hub/clutch housing comes off. Clutch housing slides out. You then take out the three torx screws, and the large washer with all the holes comes off. Now I can see the large axle nuts...
