I think I'm gonna go see about getting a new tail pipe tomorrow or sometime soon. Since mine is full of holes, and the place where they put a piece of pipe to replace my muffler is not welded very well. What I'm wondering is, if I drop from the stock 2 1/4" pipe to a 2" do you think It will help bring back some backpressure lost from not having the muffler, or should I stick with stock or somethin else?

EDIT: Would you do anything different if a LCE header was thrown into the equation?

Stock pipe size on the v6 was 1 7/8" diameter iirc, and either the same size or smaller for the 22re... My v6 has 2.25" exhuast on it currently, but when it rusts out im jumping back to a 2" exhaust...

Forgive me for the hijack and for my ignorance, but what exactly happens when you switch from 2.25 back to the stock 2.0 for the pipe. I think I have 2.25 now.

I don't know anything about this and was wondering what the benifit would be. Thanks.

Best exhaust option for the 22RE IMHO is stock manifold, 2" pipe to a 2 1/4 mufler and 2 1/4 out. You get a great balance with that setup. That was originally recomended to me by Ted at engnbldr and he's the man when it comes to the 2.4.

yea, but I'm not gonna have a muffler, so should I drop down a size in pipe or get the same. is there anything smaller than 1 7/8. I coulda swore it was 2 or 2 1/4.

it seems to me that your cat is going to give you the backpressure. i can't remember the year, but between yours and mine toyota cats became more of a "high flow". you probably have enough backpressure as is. i'd go with the 2.25 the rest of the way out. if you add a header, definitely.

It's just a comprimise...goals should be the least amount of "backpressure" and miminal pumping losses for max power. A well designed (high flow) exhaust system will have high exhaust velocity with little backpressure. Anything from 2 - 2.25 in. should be fine for a stock 2.4L.

i have a 2-1/4 cat back and a lce header.. i had the stock exhaust for a year and got the new system and it has more power now also its sounds better if you open up the intake

I think I'll give the 2" a try, I'll ask up at the muffler shop, see what they say. If I get a header down the road It wont be to bad if I decide to go back to 2 1/4.

Looks like I'm not gonna be getting a tailpipe anytime soon. Around $100 for pipe from the cat to the end. I did bend the tip of my current pipe while wheelin. Time to get the hacksaw.

So I saw an article on another board (can't find it now, think it was Ted from engnbldr) that said go with two-inch from the exhaust manifold to the cat. I have yet to find an exhaust (down) pipe other than the Bosal for the '86 22RE. Anyone know where to get a 2" exhaust (down) pipe for that vintage?

Anyone else had trouble keeping an un-cracked exhaust pipe on the 22RE?

Interesting discussion on power & torque, but nothing about where to get 2" exhaust down-pipe (manifold to cat) for an '86 22RE. What I've heard from a couple of 'Yota engine experts is for daily drivers in cold climates, headers aren't worth the money. Too much cold weather running issues and not enough power gains. From the manifold on, though, reducing flow restrictions when that part of the exhaust must be replaced anyway, is probably worth it.
