Dashpad repair

I've been trying to find some good winter-time projects that I can do inside. As of now I have a MASSIVE crack in my dashpad (as I'm sure most of you do, as well). I'm thinking of using this product:

http://www.amazon.com/Urethane-Suppl.../dp/B0002JKE6Y

to fill my crack and then wrap the whole dashboard in new vinyl from an automotive interior shop here in town. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of product? Is it easy to use/does it hold up? With a sheet of vinyl coming in at a whopping $14, I figure I can have a new dash for less than $50...

I have a small crack on my dash in the sunken area. I got some shelf liner (black perforated rubber) and trimmed to fit. I need to tack it down with some contact cement. Did the same for the sunken area on my console lid. Cheap and easy. But I want to see yours when it's done!

Here is something I found. The texturing part is the only part I would worry about not looking uniform. It is also alot of products to use.

He did a great job however.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing you are. grinding out the bulging foam, filling and then covering with some grey vinyl. That dash pad and my bench seat are the only thing I want to change in my interior.

It looks like he used the same kind of dash filler and just finished it with a texture maker. I wouldn't mind doing something like that except I am a little skeptical of vinyl paint products. I have to think that it won't hold up to the elements near as well as wrapping the dash in new vinyl. I think wrapping it in new vinyl is probably a little easier to do than messing with texturizing and costs about the same. Well, I think I am going to give it a try. I will post pics when I get it done!

Please do, I am wanting to do my faded crusty rear panels too. I think those will be near impossible though.

Hey shifty, you should just paint your rear panels with Duplicolor for fabric and vinyl. I used it for all my interior plastic panels on my 83 and the carpet. It saved me big $$ from having to replace the carpet. I restored the interior a year ago and it still looks like new even with the 100 plus degree temps here. Check out my thread...

I think I may try that vinyl paint on the rear panels for now but I think later on down the road I am going to fab up some diamond plate panels with locking cargo doors. I use my trunk area more like a truckbed so I need something rugged.

Wow maistroyoda, your interior did turn out very well, the seats are awesome.

The problem with my rear trim panels are the cracks. The have sustained some damage during removal; cracked areas. I am thinking of just glassing the damged areas on the backside and covering with vinyl. I am afraid the contours will be hard to make look good though. I plan on using a heat gun to soften the vinyl during installation.

My carpet was ridgid with packed mud when I bought this thing. I used my powerwasher to loosen it up and push most of the sand, etc. out of it. Then two sessions of hand scrubbing/rinse with Tide. It came out much better than expected.

That's also what I would do for cracks. Glue them on the reverse side that will not be seen then paint them on the front side. The paint might fill in the cracks if they're thin enough. You'd be surprised the things you can restore on your Toyotas with a little work. Most of the time it's way cheaper too than buying a new part if they're even available.

My dash is half chewed up by the previous owners dog..it's a little beyond using some filler to fix a small crack or two. I'm adding some "custom wood paneling" to the inside to cover it, we'll see how it turns out.
