Crank Bolt won't budge

Sounds like some one might have done some minor cross-threading or some big time locktite last time it was off.

Sorry about the delay

I dropped the block off at the machine shop on Tuesday and haven't heard anything since. The guy's almost impossible to get a hold of (but he had the best price). So I'm assuming all is good (which might get me in trouble)

One other thing, I was toy shopping at Sears and Home Depot and I came across the pneumatic impact that I was trying to use to break it free. It has something less than 350 torque. Too bad this was after the machine shop had the block. Oh well, something for next year's Christmas list, right?

I'll try and write up a thread on the rebuild when I get her done, I have about 120 photos so far and haven't even got the block back yet.

I'm looking at getting some air tools as well... although I was able to get the crank bolt free w/o it - it would have made the rest of this job a whole lot easier.

I've removed the head. The gasket blew at #4 - or at least that has the piston that looks shiny and new. The gasket looks suspect there as well. What a pain certain aspects of this teardown was.. a lot of knuckle busting. What is with some of those intake bolts? How are you supposed to be able to get a torque wrench in there or do they list the spec as a "get it close"?

I leaked a little gas out of my line - which concerns me. I've cleaned everything up and plugged the line. I just had having gas in my garage like that as my GAS hot water heater is out there and the pilot is constantly on. It would suck to burn down the house for a head gasket / timing chain job.

The original guides were OK but the right hand side one is brittle. I'm glad I opted to do this along with the HG.

yep... did that.. it is dry.. I was just pissed that I didn't plug the fuel line when I removed it. I usually think of doing that.

well i forgot to hook up the return fuel line. when i put my engine in my truck.. i had fuel spraying on the exhaust manifold.. i didnt wether run for the fire ex. or just shut the truck off.

my deal was i disconnect the fuel return off the engine. and when i put the engine it had the line already on the fuel rail. i was aw, its just a vacum line what the hell, i'll just start it up...

blue painters tape works very well to label all lines and hoses. a good sharpie too. and dedicate a digtal camera with alot of good pictures of everything you take off..

bag and tag every bolt and nut.. (your wife can do this job..) i made my wife do all the bagging and tagging while i continued on the removal...

I lawed everything out on a drop cloth and kept all the bolts I could in their various components. The only thing I'm worried about is the timing cover, since I imagine the shop took it off. I know some of those bolts can be a pain.

do u havee paint marker mark each bolt with differnt color. or number each bolt

put each bolt in the timming cover as soon as you pull it off, then you can take a picture so you remember the order.

for me , I used a pizza box lid......used 4crawlers picture as a template and poked the bolts through it so I don't mix them up.

i know you say your's it at the shop but you can use the template / picture to show the sizes.

So the machinest drilled it out, but didn't bother to call and let me know via my request. So I ended up running and buying one at a local minitruck dismantler.
So I've started assembly, and have over 150 pics, so I'll start working on a thread this weekend.
A few discoveries I made: I have a much older 22R block, not the one that came with my truck. The block has been rebuilt and bored before, as it was already bored more than 20 over. The machinest charged me $120 for the right size pistons, which sucked. Anyways, look for my rebuild thread this weekend..

Sorry you had so much trouble getting the bolt out, but I'm glad you posted what you went through. I'm looking forward to your rebuild thread.

I don't know much, but if you're dealing with a pre-'85 block it's a different animal than the later 85-95's. The deck height is different, requiring a different timing set and timing cover. Those in the 84-85 or pre-84 forums here can probably better advise about the differences.
