bad knocking in 2H

bad knocking in 2H
Got a 1988 4run DLX, manual, 2.4, 22re
Driving on the highway and heard this knocking on front driver side. This knocking/vibration got much worse quickly. Stopped and put it in 4neutral and the problem disappeared. Locking hubs are free.
I'm a newbie, and just want to identify the problem before I get it looked at. Looked at the tech forums and don't see anyone with a similar problem.
Anyone?

Check yer drivers side motor mount...better yet lock yer hubs in and put in 4lo and have a friend watch the motor mount through the drivers side wheel well from a fe feet away,ease off clutch a tad and see if it separates top from bottom

Does not make any noise with the vehicle idle. Only when rolling. When I put the TC shifter between 4HI and 4LO I can drive without any noise at all.

This doesn't sound right, you shouldn't be able to drive at all with the transfer case in this position as it should be Neutral. As in, no power going to any wheel.

Sorry, my bad. In H2 I get this scraping noise that increases with the speed of the vehicle. When I shift to H4, or L4, the scraping/grinding goes away. In Neutral, the transfer case is disengaged - as it's suppose to.
I had someone look at the motor mount on the driver's side while in motion, and all appears normal.
I'll try to jack it up and check the axle bolts, but something tells me this is a transfer case problem. I'm just not sure - this is an odd problem.
