bad knocking in 2H

Got a 1988 4run DLX, manual, 2.4, 22re

Driving on the highway and heard this knocking on front driver side. This knocking/vibration got much worse quickly. Stopped and put it in 4neutral and the problem disappeared. Locking hubs are free.

I'm a newbie, and just want to identify the problem before I get it looked at. Looked at the tech forums and don't see anyone with a similar problem.

Anyone?

Thanks

Rich

Do you mean that while parked and in 2H you continued to hear the noise idling, and when you put the TC shifter in neutral between 4HI and 4LO the noise disappeared?

Check yer drivers side motor mount...better yet lock yer hubs in and put in 4lo and have a friend watch the motor mount through the drivers side wheel well from a fe feet away, ease off clutch a tad and see if it separates top from bottom

Thanks for replying!

Does not make any noise with the vehicle idle. Only when rolling. When I put the TC shifter between 4HI and 4LO I can drive without any noise at all.

You can jack up one front wheel while in 4x4, rotate and giggle the wheel to see what is loose. I had a loose axle bolts on my front and found them this way.

This doesn't sound right, you shouldn't be able to drive at all with the transfer case in this position as it should be Neutral. As in, no power going to any wheel.

I was thinking the same redneck.
OP, if you were driving the interstate with 4wd engaged your transfer case maybe busted.

Sorry, my bad. In H2 I get this scraping noise that increases with the speed of the vehicle. When I shift to H4, or L4, the scraping/grinding goes away. In Neutral, the transfer case is disengaged - as it's suppose to.

I had someone look at the motor mount on the driver's side while in motion, and all appears normal.

I'll try to jack it up and check the axle bolts, but something tells me this is a transfer case problem. I'm just not sure - this is an odd problem.

Thanks again for your replies!
