Interesting...get it fixed yet?

My ignition switch started working intermittenly, had a delay and even needed to be backed off slightly to start the truck a couple of weeks ago. Now it won't start at all with the key. Jump the switch wire over to the main starter + wire and it starts every time. Haven't had time to fix it right. A relay is what I'm pretty sure I need. I just don't know what size fuse I should use with it.

Its gonna be in the key ignition it sounds like. might have to pull it apart and check it. Or run you a hot wire into the cab to a push button and then to the starter. use that to start the truck with the key on. worked in my old 85 s-10 blazer

I am planning on doing this on my old '85. My question is this, does the hot, switched wire going to the push putton need to be fused?(protected) Aren't all the wires going to the original switche already fused?

Thanks for the link 4Crawler. I have one more question. If the starter part of the ignition switch is shot, will it still provide the milliamps to the relay? I would rather not use a push button to start her up but want a solid and long lasting fix.
A few years back I had a friend who was into alarms and stereo's put in a starter disable switch way up under the dash. I guess it could be failing but as I mentioned before I felt like the switch was going bad, got worse and then stopped altogether.

Yes, typically will work fine unless the stitch is 100% burned out and inoperative. Why? Current, with the solenoid only, you have like 20 amps pulled through the ignition switch, with a relay only 0.1 amps. So with 200 times less current, you get 200 times less voltage drop and relays will typically pull in with only about 6-9 volts across them, so are not as sensitive as the starter solenoid is.

Will I need to put in an inline fuse? Where?

Good idea to put one between the power source and the relay contacts.
