A340H, tell me how to fix it.

I bought a '88 4Runner a couple months ago.

When i bought it the PO said it had sat for the last 2 years because of transmission problems.

I did the google and read about the solenoids and ordered them the second it was on the trailer home. (with a fresh battery it started up and they drove it on the trailer)

I had the solenoids replaced and the little beast serviced. Threw on some 30/9.50/15s Gerneral Grabber ATs and started loving life.

Then I lost reverse. Started off slowly and now it laughs at me, it doesn't move.

Went back to the google. I know there is an exterior second band adjustment, the throttle cable setting or the possibility that one of the solenoids might be bad. *but don't even know if any of them effect reverse.

Thing is I also read about testing reverse in 4wd hi and lo.

Reverse works fine in 4wd low, but nothing in hi

What is wrong with it and what is the cheapest fix. And since I am one cheap bastard I might just put it in 4wd low anytime I actually have to use reverse.

it does NOT move at ALL, what so ever, in 2h? When you put in R, do you wait a few seconds, before hitting the gas? What exactly happens....the RPM's go, and the 4runner doesn't move under it's own power.....even if SLOW at 1st?

My '94 just started doing the samething, but when I drop in reverse, SOMETIMES it moves properly, sometimes it barely moves while giving it gas, until I wait a few seconds. My rig has been to Toyota, they adjusted all the bands, and said they could not duplicate what I told them. So, I just drop it in 4low when I have to back up. I have the same tranny as you, and no tranny codes come up. Will be watching this thread......

there is no difference between 2 wheel and 4wd hi. it doesn't move.

have it in reverse and drop it into 4wd lo, and boom you are moving backwards.

When you shift into "L" on 2wd, does first gear accelerate normally and apply engine braking when you let off the gas?
