94 V6 callipers on my 86 pickup
Has anyone tried this around here? I owned a 94 and really liked the larger callipers/pads and improved stopping. Now I assumed everything would work because when I had the 4runner and comparing it to my 86 things looked pretty much the same, and I even swapped the rotors between the 4runner and a 87 4runner. So after doing that I figured the thicker rotors wasn't an issue to worry about.
However, I bought some '94 v6 4runner callipers from NAPA and it doesn't look good. The backing plate had to be trimmed a little, no big deal. And I test fit and double checked and everything seemed fine. BUT I made the HUGE mistake to attach the lines before I put the pads in. Well when I got the pads in.......and they are not flush with the edge of the rotor. It seems the calliper isn't close enough towards the hub, like the diameter of the rotor is too small but both the 86 and 94 rotors are the same diameter. Anyone know if this will be ok?? I guess I'll find out cause now that the lines are attached, I'm screwed for taking them back. Did toyota change the spindle/knuckle mounts??

The pads should sit against the rotors when the brake pedal is not pressed. There should not be some huge gap.
I have the IFS V6 calipers on my 85 with FJ62 vented rotors and they fit nice and snug.
Not sure what you got but it doesn't sound right.

he has ifs, isnt your rig SA rabbit? Bear, do the earlier trucks have 4 piston fronts? I know my 4 banger does.

Way I read it he's talking about the pads are out past the EDGE of the rotor. Mine are the same way. Maybe 1/8" past the edge. They sit nice against the rotor tho. Work great.

All the calipers are 4 piston AFAIK...the 4 bangers all had 2 small and 2 large pistons, the V6 has the 4 big pistons and the caliper body has "fins" on it.
Sure, the pads don't have to be "flush" with the OD of the rotor but they do need to sit flush with the sides of the rotor.

Yep, dead on. So where did you get your callipers? I took a closer look at the napa part #'s and it appears the callipers I got from them cross with a T-100. Toyota does not show these callipers as ones that can cross. Tomorrow I will take them back and try to find the correct callipers. From the web site, Napa's part#'s for the callipers change in 92 so I'll have to see what they pull with a 91.

I know what they should look like but the ones I got are a little different and sadly I assumed they would work. Tomorrow I will find out for sure and I'm 100% positive NAPA sold me callipers for a T100 and their system is crossed wrong.

Well, I can spot one mistake right off the bat. 94 V6 rotors are 1" thick, where as earlier(80's and early 90's) were 7/8" thick.
I swapped V6 calipers from a 90 onto my 86 pickup and it works great.

However for my 86 truck I wanted the larger calipers since I had both originals leaking. Just a few months ago I put new rotors on trying to solve why my front brakes won't lockup. I just bought replacement 7/8" not the 1", now I wish I did but it's not at all an issue for concern with their performance. -- Also looking back I think why I had a mussy pedal and lacked lockup was due to OEM pads going bad.

The Toyota part# for the correct right hand calliper I want to use is - 47730-35080 it crosses to:
Superseeds 47730-35040 which is called for 4runner/Truck from 08/83-03/89
4runner/Truck 4wd and 2wd from 08/88-11/95
Truck 4wd from 02/92-01/95
THEN the T-100 right hand calliper number is - 47730-34010
IT IS ONLY FOR T-100 NOT ANY OTHER TOYOTA, only crosses to T-100 from 08/92-07/98
All straight from the EPC
I'm confident I jumped the gun with this thread and that NAPA has their part#'s and cross compatibility of the callipers screwed up.

Possibly there is something different, but mine look the same as the ones Wabbit posted...
Same large 4 pistons, perhaps the actual size of the caliper is different. I cannot tell you the exact part #'s as I dont have the box and its to dmn cold and snowy to look at them right now.
FWIW mine are from a parts supplier through my mechanic..
Maybe the actual dimensions are different...perhaps they would line up with the 95 and under trucks/runs 2nd gen stuff? I dont know..

Ok, went to NAPA and got the correct callipers. FYI, in a national chain store the part numbers for the callipers should be the same from 89-95. IF there is a part# change from 92-95 you will probabaly get T-100 callipers like I did.
First these T-100 callipers will bolt up to the spindle but the pads will set about 1/8" past the edge of the rotor. So here are some pictures I shot of the T-100 callipers compaired to a set of the correct callipers my dad pulled from a junked truck for use on his '87 4runner.
Close but side by side you can see the difference

Hey, do you guys know about the 4runner having bigger (shoes) brakes in the rear. I ain't sure what years, exactly. I got a 87 4runner rear axle on my 88 pickup. It came as a pleasent suprise to me. With my 35's, I'm interested in how this plays out as well.

My guess is my research was wrong, since everyone's experience lines up in this thread that T100 and 4R are different. Now I'm curious whether the T100 rotors are 1/2" bigger and can be run with the T100 calipers for a slightly stronger brake? Anyone want to measure T100 rotors vs the 90-95 4R? Same offset right?
edit: Further research says 92+ 4runners did come with the S13WB calipers, which is the T100 caliper that is set for a slightly larger diameter. So for a direct swap, just make sure you get the '90-91 4Runner (and 89-95 4x4 pickup) S12W casting. Be sure not to get the S12+8 which is the one you already have with assymetric pistons (IFS 86-89), or the S12 which is the narrow version for non-vented rotors (solid axle, 79-85).
