BigT,
I will try jacks on opposite sides as you suggested. I am not having a problem getting the snap ring off of the outboard side of the shaft, I am having a problem getting the snap ring back on once I put the new shaft through the hub.

You still can't get that thing on yet? I guess I'd pull it out and check that its the right part. If it is maybe unbolt the ball joint and move the hub in.

Another thought was maybe your alignment is really negitive on the camber? Front wheels like this / \

Yes - I had this same issue! The answer for me was to measure! I measured the new 1/2 shafts I got and the stupid thin was just a fraction longer (from the hub end to the snap groove) and the snap ring wouldn't lock in. I took it back and got another one - went right in.

Dale,
I just got an alignment a few weeks ago. I am still just looking for any and all suggestions as I am still having an issue. I did measure last night and the original Toyota shaft is the exact same as the NAPA shaft.

Karl, did you compare the distance between the ring gap and the end of the shaft or the length of the whole thing?

Hello,
I measured the new shaft vs the old shaft by doing the following: 1) Measured from the first step in the shaft to the location of where the snap ring goes on both....this matched. 2) Measured the step the dust deflector sits on to verify it is the same width on both....it matched. 3) Measured the dust deflector old vs. new to make sure they are the same width...they matched. I didn't measure from the extreme outboard end of the shaft to the snap ring groove as that shouldn't matter in my mind. I just need to find a way to pull the shaft further through the hub so that I can lock the snap ring on.

Ouch! have you taken the CV back out completely and looked at the inner/outer spindle bushings? only thing I can think of at the moment is that one or the other has been pulled out or it has worn and bulged out :-/ I'm at a loss heck i cant even find a picture of the spindle/knuckle bushings :-/

Workhorse,
I think I may have discovered what the problem is. I just went back to Toyota and they gave me a totally different set of dust covers. They don't have a metal lip on them like the ones they originally sold me. I think they gave me the wrong parts originally and the lip on the seals was taking up the space I needed. I will let you know after I get into the truck again this weekend.
