LP burns super clean, less damage to the engine over time, but in my area its pretty hard to find propane at the same price of gas. It can be done but its usually industrial supply yards which is less than convenient.
Before you decide to go propane and drive it on the road make sure you have enough places to get fuel (or a large enough store of it at home).
I'd run propane if it wasn't such a hassle to obtain, but its not a very popular fuel outside of industrial yards.

Does doing propane on an engine originally designed for gas (22re) net better power or better mpg? One of the forklifts at my work has a 4.5L i6 LPG engine, its HP is 96 at the crank.

That engine was designed for torque, NOT hp.
I've heard of farm trucks going well over 400,000 miles on the original rings, pistons, valves, etc etc. And have the oil still look clean after 3000 miles.
Propane combusts significantly cleaner than regular gasoline, and you can tell by the fact that propane has the "hotter" blue flame, while gasoline has a "cooler" yellow flame, with black smoke.

Exhaust gases might be a little warmer, but the main point is that it burns cleaner, resulting in a brighter, bluer flame. With less carbon leftover from the combustion, less carbon gets built up on top of the piston and valves..
