88 toyota 4x4 truck with a 92 22re efi wiring help
I bought a 88 toyota 4x4 with a 92 22re efi motor someone tried to swap. Now I am stuck with the wiring and really not sure what would be the best way to go. Any help or input would be great! Motor won't roll over when you turn the key the only thing that comes on is the fuel pump

Long as nothing is butchered their should be a Hot wire to the starter from the battery (big fat wire) and a small relay wire plugged into the starter also.
Clutch switch hooked up?
Ground straps from engine to frame?

Yes was bought non running. I kinda just threw out a cheep number and the guy took it. Lol I have both of the wiring and computers. Bought both chilton manuals for both years the 88 and 92. Thinking about pulling everything and going back with new so I know what's in it.. But then again my pocket book tells me it won't be good.

Your orginal post said it was just with a 92 motor if I understood right. The motor will work. If they tried to use a 92 harness, that is going to be a big soup sandwich. Go with the 88 wiring. 88 is a stand alone year due to the injectors being different in several different ways.
I prefer a Haynes manual over a Chilton. Chilton leaves alot of unexplained information in my opinion. Chilton is good if you are familiar with the project and just need a refresher.
When the weather warms up, I am swapping harnesses on two different trucks. What other info are wanting to know? To put in the correct harness, you will need to tear the dash down quite aways. It is a big job and the first time is most likely to take you several hours.

The only problem with the wiring is that 88 was a transition year. Up until Aug of 88 the 22 -re had low impedance injectors with a resistor pack which was part of the body harness that comes out of the cab inside the passenger side fender, not the engine harness.
After Aug the 22-re had high impedance injectors with out the resistor pack. Some guys have run the high impedance injector engine harness in a factory low impedance injector vehicle by simply jumpering out the connector for the resistor pack. I've never studied the wiring diagrams for this wiring, so I can't tell you if there are any other changes that need to be made in the wiring.

So there's really no way around it. I'm not sure what wiring to start following in my chiltons there is engine wiring for the 22re 1989-92 4tunner and 1989-90 22re pickup. Doesn't help me. The only other one I found is 1991-92 pickup 4-cylinder. Is it talking about the 22re when it says 4 cyl or is it the other 4cyl they had? Did they come out with a 4runner pickup in 92 and that's were they got the 22re? Pritty confused

Pray tell just where do you live ??
This is a mess that you bought into I really hope it is a labor of love and your not under any pressure or time limits.
You along with all of us have no real idea what might have been done you could be just a few wires away from having a running truck
Any where close to eastern Pa? If you are I would be glad to help in person.
trying to do this without the Toyota EWD`s (Electrical wiring diagrams ) would drive even the best of us crazy.
The Chiltons and Haynes just get people more confused
Keep looking on Ebay perhaps what you need will pop up.
The only thing you need worry about is the engine harness and merging the cab harness into the ecu.
With the right information in front of you it takes time just is not all that difficult( well for some people)
I wish you the best of luck!!

If it were me, I would find an entire 88 harness and start over. When someone has tried to take a different gen harness, it can be a mess to figure out. I am currently doing a harness swap (22r -22re) on the last few pages of my 86 runner build. It is not as bad to do as you might think. I will take awhile to accomplish. With the weather, it might be a little while before I start putting it back in. I am doing a step by step. I am almost ready to start reinstalling it. I want to replace the heater core while it is so far down.
You could use a runners harness as well, but the tail lights, run inside the cab instead of along the frame and you would also have all of the wiring to the tailgate to mess with on the fuse box. I would try to get a truck harness.

88s injectors are a one year only, their resistance is considerably different then the others. If it was to run a 92, the 92 has more emissions then the 88, so I am guessing you would have a Check Engine Light. I am going to say it wont run a 92, but I am just guessing. I do know you wont get the 88 harness on a 92 injector. They are keyed different.
If you are just wanting to stick the 88 computer into the harness connection, I cant help there either. Does the computer take the injector resistance into account? Could it ruin a computer? Maybe someone else could answer that for you.
The 88 and 89-94 injectors are Red Tops, but looking at them, they are similar other then the key. Notice the resistance difference. Also notice on the two different red injectors that the key on the side is different. One is higher then the other.
Copied........
Here are the 3 types of injectors. The white one is 85- 87, the 88 looks just like the 89 and up but the fool proof tabs are different. I dont remember which one is which but 85-87 is 1.5-3.0 Ohms, 88 is 1.0-2.5 Ohms, and the 89 and newer are 13.4-14.2 Ohms. Do a resistance check to see which ones you have.
