4wd not working, light is on, lever is engaged but still in 2 wheel drive.

I ran into this issue this weekend, I drove into my ranch and it was MUDDY. I got where I was going but suddenly realized that I was NOT IN 4WD!

My light was on, my hubs locked but the front 2 wheels were not engaged.

Well apparently I had an issues with one of the front locking hubs. It was not engaging. BOTH HUBS HAVE TO BE ENGAGED IF 4x4 is GOING TO WORK!

Ok. Here is what I did. (this was six days ago, I'm a bit fuzzy on some of it so here I go....)

I winched my self from tree to tree till I got to the rock road by my gate.

I drove to a friends house.

I pulled the suspected hub off (drivers side)

Disassemble.

There is a little check ball in the side of the deal there. It is TINY. Dont loose it or the spring when you are taking it apart. It was all rusty. There is a spring behind it. Be careful. They are both TINY! TINY I SAY. Dont loose them.

Clean it all up. Clean the little ball up with a little emory cloth. Clean the teeth gently with break clean, and a wire brush (Gentle now...) Spray off spring.

Spray out the inside of where the hub goes. Clean as best as possible.

Reassemble. I put a little grease from the grease gun in the teeth and such.

Pay attention when you slide the hub out as it has to go in the way it came out.

Worked like a charm after that...

I realize this is not the best walk through, but I'm sure someone has done a post about a non functioning hub so search it out and probably find a better one...

Hope this helps someone out.

RJ

Yah, It was. I just put the winch on the truck. I set it up so I could move it from the front to the back as needed. I welded on a class 3 receiver to the front and rear bumpers. I just have it wired up to the front right now but I'm going to try to get the back wire in place as soon as I get the 2nd battery installed.

If you have a northern tool near you, you can just buy the class 3 receiver for like...12 or 15 bucks? Just the square part. One of the ones I used I found laying in the road near where I work so I went and skaged it.

Yah, I'm real happy w. the set up so far.

This might be the fix I'm looking for. I went night wheeling last night and I had to bonsi everything. There was no crawling slow and making it up. I'll look up a rebuild thread but this makes me feel better. My friend in his dad's cherokee just crawled right thru everything it was embarrassing... Thank you for posting this up!
