31/9.50/15's? I need help finding a set.

Ok the tire search has begun and I can't seem to find a single tire in 31/9.50/15. Heck even a 245/75/R15 would work if I could find one.

Do any of you know who manufactures a good tire for a DD and weekend camping rig in either of those sizes? I'd prefer not to run with a BFG A/T if I can help it and would prefer something with a tread pattern like the BFG Mud Terrain if at all possible.

Thanks guys.

That is such an odd size, why do you want it exactly?
if you want a 9.5 wide tire you either have to go 30" or 33".
or, just get a 31x10.5 and be done with it...

Yeah it is an odd size. I don't want to go with 33's since I'll have to regear from the 4.10's I've got in the truck. I would rather not go with 30's since it's only a little larger than the stock 28's that are on there. That and I'm not really sure that 30's would do that well off road.

Thanks for the reply.

What truck do you have? v6 5spd? I have 33x12.5's on this set up and dont mind the gearing, brings the RPM's down a bit on the highway which is nice... if i need the power i can just drop a gear...
33x9.5's would be a good deal lighter than my 12.5's.. i think it'd be fine on stock gears.
Auto tranny? yeah.. you'd have to regear...

If you have a 4 cyl, 31s is the biggest you can do on stock gears, its already undergeared.

I'm thinking of stepping down from 31x10.5 to 30x9.5 because I am convinced skinnies would work better.

Is BFG the only 30 x 9.5 tire maker?

I should have posted more information, sorry about that. It's an 86, 4x4, 5 speed standard, with the 22re 4 cylinder and 4.10 gears.

I did some more looking after posting that and found that the 30/9.50/15's in a BFG Mud Terrain (my favorite tire) can be had for about 145$ each. I called a tire place and the mount and balance on 5 of these will be 856$. That leaves me enough money in the tire fund to pick up an Aussie Locker.

I think getting new tires and a locker for what I was planning on spending on just tires is a good thing. Besides I can't afford to regear, lift etc..... this is a DD/camping rig after all.

Thanks to all who replied.

Lots of companies make 30x9.50's. Kumho makes a good MT for a lot less than BFG...tread pattern somewhat similar. Cooper makes a good MT...same size...a bit expensive, though. And, still, there are others.

I've had 30x9.50's on all of my 4x4's at one point or another.....MT's, at that. Unless, you're getting into very rugged terrain where you need a lot of clearance, this size does well...particularly an MT with lockers.

I know a lot of people have good and bad things to say about retreads. If I was driving cross country I wouldn't get them but if I'm just beatin my truck up in the backwoods why not? You can search for threads on the topic and decide for yourself but you can get 30x9.5 MT retreads for $55 per tire. Then you can afford two lockers and maybe a winch.

235/85-16 (yes 16) was all i could find for ya, (multiple selections easily viewed at the tirerack site). you really think there will be a significant difference in performance? if you were looking to eliminate a rub issue i could understand, but you could probably manipulate the foot print more with just air pressure adjustments maybe? good luck in your search bro

Kumho huh? I'd never even heard of them until now. Discount tire here sells them so I'll have to run up there and see what they can do to order me a set.

Thanks!!!!

You're welcome.

Kumho used to make the "Powerguard"....which IMO was one of the best MT's you could get. Great price, very tough, thick sidewall, and excellent traction on most conditions. I had literally put a nail through the tread in one and kept driving like that for a long while. Then Kumho decided (for some reason) to change the mid section of the tread pattern to better suit road travel......less noise...and still maintain offroad ability. So, now it's the "Road Venture". It works.....still good price, still tough and good traction, but it grabs rocks a little bit more. Oh, and they do air down well. I've not bought any Kumho's in several years since I changed where I shop for tires. Were I able to get Kumho's there, I'd still be running them. So, now I run BFG A/T's. Lousy compromise on the traction (for mud), but cheaper than BFG M/T's. I'm considering Dunlop's on next set. I've heard mixed on those, though.
