Who needs a tach to shift, lol?
I learned quick:
Too early, and she lugs around..
Too late, and you're just hurting your engine.

been driving mine for a year and a half, no tach, but gonna put one in now on the fresh rebuild, might make tuning a little easier. other than that no need for it unless you racing.

lol, 22re or not, red-lining and bouncing off the factory set rev limiter can hurt ANY engine...

anything over 4k on a stock 22re is useless anyway...

even with my head and cam combo, my 22re still only really pulls hard up to 4500 RPMs, and then it just falls on it's face...

Ok so I checked the RPMs with a Dwell tach my father had in the basement and turns out that yes infact my tach is a POS. haha. The 2k the pos tach was really 4k. So all is well. (even though 4k shouldnt be a blow up point haha)

Thanks yotatechers!!

What is a 22re's rev limit, off hand, so i don't have to look it up. I've prob never had mine over 4200, and i prob logged that in. Ah interesting post (does anyone fill out a driving log). I bought my truck on Oct 1987, and have filled a log out from day one, i lost the first 2 years but have from 89 on, i can look up any and all things i did including gas , dang prices where cheap then.115.9$ dang

Nah just 3 small 4'x5' note book, fits on a 4 inch line, page heading lists----- Date / milage / fuel Gal / $ per Gal / fill $ / notes. And then info for oil change or a mod, ( Wix oil f 221544, 10/30 penzoil ) or (brakes front 223566) etc, real simple. last counted 92 oil changes lol. Last bf/goods lasted 410771 miles/and cost 127 apiece. all good info? i think

I installed a cheap auto parts tach in my s-10 about 4 years ago, and i remember that in the directions it said that if it was a 4 cyl to set it to the position marked with the 8, if it was a 6 set it on the 6 and if was an 8 cly to set it to the 4. I dont know why it was backwards but it worked. So i say set it to the 8 and slide the tolerance switch to the left and check it with the dwell, if thats not right try adjusting the tolerance switch. I hope this helps, if not it was only a few minutes wasted

My 22RE loves it when I bounce it off the rev-limiter at 6250 RPM. It shoots flames and mud at the same time!

142ft/lbs tq @ 2800 rpm and 112 hp at 4800 rpm I believe.

My truck pulls a lot better above 4K rpm than 3K. but I only hit 4K in 3rd, around 60-65 miles per hour. This whole summer I would usually cruise the express way at 4K rpm just for fun and so I could make it up the overpass hills with ease, while accelerating. 3.5K-4.5K rpm is the sweet spot for my 22re.

Here it says people are shifting at like 3000 rpm when they are driving normal. For me at 2000 rpm it sounds like its gonna blow up, like it should be at 4500 insted of 2000. It has an aftermarket tach that might be off but I doubt it. I normally shift at like 1000...which is insanely low. Its like I have no power. I know these trucks are slow but this slow?
Its a 22re, stock, 1000 miles on the rebuilt engine, 31's (15 inch wheels on front 16's on the back), and stock gears (as far as I know)
Does any one know what this can be?
Your Tach is off, you don't need a tach to know when to shift, you can feel it if you aren't an idiot... I shifted at 3.5-4k Rpms when I had a '86 22R on 33" MT's...

i shift at 3800. when i shift at 4000, it makes this extra little grunt as i depress the clutch that i don't like. i can't tell what it is. there's no more power above 4 anyway, so i shift at 3800.

cruising i keep it at 3200. that's where the power is. below 3k the truck starts to bog.
i have 33s with 4.11s. it has a hard time getting above 65mph. i never use 5th.

I just listen to the motor and I imagine if I had a tach I would be shifting around 3-3300 on a regular basis.
IMO 3800 is kinda high, but I like to take it easy on my engine though

every once in a while, I like to just shift when I hear my valves floating

that seems to happen at a higher RPM now with the engnblder RV head with the stiffer springs

but in all seriousness (if that's a word ), I reached the rev limiter today in 1st gear playing with some rice-burner honda here in town, lmao. It was AWESOME!!! It sounded so sweet...

oh and the 'ol 22re ROASTED the Honda by the way
