At 2k RPM it sounds like its gonna blow up.

So I wanted to see what people shift at in there 22re. After reading this thread I was throughly suprised.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...r-22re-103129/

Here it says people are shifting at like 3000 rpm when they are driving normal. For me at 2000 rpm it sounds like its gonna blow up, like it should be at 4500 insted of 2000. It has an aftermarket tach that might be off but I doubt it. I normally shift at like 1000...which is insanely low. Its like I have no power. I know these trucks are slow but this slow?
Its a 22re, stock, 1000 miles on the rebuilt engine, 31's (15 inch wheels on front 16's on the back), and stock gears (as far as I know)
Does any one know what this can be?

If you have an after market tach thats your prob...... sorry to be blunt but thats how it is. Shifting at 1000 is a freaking joke and is very hard on your engine a trans. Your tach has to be off. I'll tell you that Toyota recommends 2000-4000 shifts for a 22r. Personally i shift right before 3 for normal driving. For good mpg shift about 2-3. 22re's operate well at high rpms so no worries unless your red lining which is a big no no.

So is my tach off?? Like its saying that I am at 2k when really I am at a higher RPM? Can a tach really have that much of an influence on how the engine runs? The previous owner put the tach in and its pretty junkie. So just ditch the tach altogether?

i would ditch the tach. what brand is it???

alos. i dnt think it would be possible to shift at 1000rpm in all your gears. and if it is possible it probably also sounds like its gna blow up. lol...

get a good tach. or just shift by sounds of the engine.

The tach brand is suntune? For me it sounds like its time to shift when the tach says its 1100. So its not like the tach is restricting it...or is it?

never even heard of suntune, i would just go buy a good brand name tach and test it out. 1100 is ridicuously low. and the tach cant physically restrict an engine. tachs are electronic. at least for my stock one it is. and the aftermarket one i put in my 2wd is also electronic

sounds to me like your tack is set for a 6 or 8 cyl is it an aftermarket gauge or an swapped sr5 tach, if it is an aftermarket you can probably switch it to operate properly on a 4cyl

The tach is just a passive gauge. It has nothing to do with the engine's powerband. How could it?

It sounds like your tachometer is at least on the wrong setting if not malfunctioning. There should be a slider switch on the back to pick between 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines. There are lots of gearing calculators online; verify your speed/rpm relationship with one. Your old SunTune can be replaced if necessary with a Sun Super Tach II for about $35.00 from the chain parts stores.

Dump tach, shift bye the seat of your pants and ears, unless you are deaf it would work out to be about 3k rpm

what this "tach" showing at idle?

how about while cruising at say 55mph?

yeah I shift mine just at or right below 3k on a normal basis, and routinely take it to 4-4.5k if I'm in a hurry, or as Chris Farley would say, unless I'm chasing a cute chick in a Ferrari

1k shifts sound kinda wrong to me... that tach's GOT to be reading wrong... there's no way... 1k isn't that high up from what the idle is suppose to be...

this is about 4-5k

sounds to me like the Tach is set for a V8 since it seems to be reading at about half of what the actual RPM's are..lol

look on the back of the Tach..there is probably a switch on the back that lets it be able to go from reading a V8, V6 or I4..

i know i can set mine to V8 and make some people go ???WTF???..LMAO

ditto on what camo said i used to have a sun tach in my old car and there was a switch on the back to switch between 4,6, & 8 cyliders. that sound like the prob or do you have it hooked to right wire. Ive had that problem before in other cars where there was more then one whire to go off of and some only read ine half of engine speed.

I have no idea. It says it idles at 600. Which is right cause its a little low (750 is stock) and at 60-65 mph in 5th gear it says im at 1100 rpm. I checked the back of the tach and it is at the 4 cylinder spot. And there was this "Zero Tolerence" slidey thing and I slid it all the way to the left ( cause it was all the way to the right) and that said it idled at 100...haha so I switched it back. So is the overall verdict ditch the tach? Cause i dont think i have a loss of power but Im not sure...since Ive never driven a 22re besides this rebuilt one.
