If mine did not have the bottom end knock and me wanting to build an engine instead of just doing the bearings and timing cover , I could have replaced the timing cover and put the drivers side metal guide timing set in my motor and been done with it. It had the same look as yours and had great cylinder pressure readings I found out from a friend about the FALSE blown head gasket issue and he was right it was just the timing chain had rubbed threw the cover making it look like the head gasket was shot.

So bottom line is if you have not already done a cylinder pressure check start there you may get lucky and be able to do less then you think to fix the problem.

No, seriously......I'm new to this engine stuff....but reading the FSM says (in regards to timing chain) to remove the head........is that right??? If not, are there special tools I need? I plan on draining the oil....probably today, i'm wiped out from working 16hrs yesterday though......but hopefully after changing the oil and putting fresh in, i will start it up and it will sound the same.

when i started it the other night (before it shut down), i do remember a ticking sound that lasted about 3 minutes....and i thought to myself that usually only lasts a few seconds at most (always thought it was noisy lifters waiting for oil....what the hell do i know?) but could that have been the timing chain??? If so, then the Thermagasket stuff didn't stand a chance.........except that it did last about a thousand miles........but it wasn't intended for timing chain issues.....assuming currently that's what it is because i would think a loose / rubbing timing chain would erode whatever "patch" had been created.
won't know until i dig down.

i will start my own thread when i do dig in.......don't expect any rapid progress anytime soon......the old me wanted everything yesterday, the new me wants to only do things once and right............so there's alot of preliminary "psyching" that will go into this, as well as research and parts buying and tool prep........so stay tuned.

and while i'm whining..........what about an oil filter relocation kit........i searched it on here....saw good and bad.......is it worth it? i know it's not a necessary mod but a convenience thing......probably not gonna do it unless i hear it's the best thing since sliced bread......just thinking today....move the truck, take the wheel off, make my arms longer to reach the filter,curse-curse-curse,make a mess etc...etc...PFFFT!
