22re Rebuild Video

Just came across this on EBAY .......http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOT...Q5fAccessories

was wondering if anybody has it and if so is is any good?

i am need of a headgasket fix on my 92 truck with a 22re and i am easily intimidated at the prospect of doing it myself.......but the cost of paying someone to do what i probably could do is prohibitive right now as well.

i know that whe doing such a re-build there are things you should do while in the area (water pump, oil pump) as well as things that might be recommended too (pistons, cam, header) to do a complete job.

i've been watching Bleeder and Olharleyman lately with their builds and think if those 2 made a video available it would be a greatest hit and a must have for all of us, but until then I will be waiting.

i need something geared towards a novice mechanic with a skill and knowledge level of about a 3 out of 5.

thanks......

By the way, a relevent 3vze one as well would be needed too since the 88 4runner we have needs some attention too.

keep your $15 bucks but if you want a copy let me know and I will send you a copy.
I was hoping it would be a lot more informitive then it is and you could learn some thing but it's not at all. I got it after most of my build was done a friend turned me on to it and I can say there is a lot more info here then on the dvd I got.

hey thanks.

ya know, this site can be tough to filter through though.

like i said, you an Bleeder could make a Yota-porn (i like that phrase!) video and it would out-sell anything.

reading these threads can be aggravating to say the least to filter through to get to the answers.......so when you are shakey darts like me at even starting something like this i'd like to be as prepared as possible tool wise / supplies wise / knowledge wise.

i think i could do this job myself and using the $1000 estimate i got from the garage as incentive to do it too.

my truck runs just fine, strong and quiet.......so i'm feeling confident that it's only the head gasket........any advice would be appreciated........so i doubt i have to do any massive amount of work....when i've posed this question on this topic before, i've received alot of encouragement which is very much apreciated, but i'd like to know some basics too......
i have the FSM / Chilton's / Haynes / and even the Moses book / a 3 car gaage / a good assortment of tools / a good back .

i guess i just get jealous looking at Bleeder's and Olharley's engines ad thinking that mine could look the same too.

The hardest part is getting over being intimidated. Go for it.

I didn't do anything myself until age 30 when I got tired of paying for subpar work I could do myself with a little effort.

Now if I pay for some work it is because I want an expert or simply don't have time myself.

Good luck.

thanks wabbit...

if you know what i should be prepared with, or a good write-up, let me know.

like i said, reading through all these threads is very time consuming, and frustrating to filter through. reading Bleeder's and Olharleyman's threads is about the best i've come across so far, but there's both go to the extreme. My engine certainly is not in need of a total rebuild at this point as far as i can tell. if it weren't for me taking my oil cap off and seeing the tan foam, i wouldn't know there is even a problem.

Runs good and strong, no pings or rattles etc.....so it seems i'm only in need of the obligatory head gasket repair that seems to come with the territory.

My truck had been my daily driver (193,000 miles, mine since mile 1)until that happened and then i bought a SWEET '96 Cadillac Sedan Deville to buzz around in. I needed wheels immediately when my head gasket failed so i picked up that car 2 days later. in the past year i've become far more knowledgeable and confident in doing things though. so if it were a year ago i probably would have aggressively researched this all and done it in a weekend or so.

yes, it blew a year ago, it sat in the garage until march of this year when i bought Thermagasket and put that in. holding well but i still just don't trust it to not fail on me and want to do the right repair.

for now it's a cost / benefit choice. for a cost i could get it done professionally and if something goes bad i blame them. on the other hand i could likely do this myself and say i did it and hopefully not screw something up and end up costing me more in the long run.

what i'm looking for is "if your're only doing down to the head gasket get _________ tools and gaskets etc...." and any litlle hints and advice for doing the job.

i know a digital camera is a must as well.

any info is appreciated.

A thought before you go into this to deep

Check your cylinders and make sure your really in need of a head gasket it MAY be easier then that , could be that your timing chain has worn threw the timing cover and you will get the same effect with the oil in the water looking like the head gasket is blown.

If mine did not have the bottom end knock and me wanting to build an engine instead of just doing the bearings and timing cover , I could have replaced the timing cover and put the drivers side metal guide timing set in my motor and been done with it. It had the same look as yours and had great cylinder pressure readings I found out from a friend about the FALSE blown head gasket issue and he was right it was just the timing chain had rubbed threw the cover making it look like the head gasket was shot.

So bottom line is if you have not already done a cylinder pressure check start there you may get lucky and be able to do less then you think to fix the problem.

hey wait a minute........

i just was reading my FSM and Haynes......that's no easier. Damn!!

i knew that if i was going to take the head off i was gonna get into changing the timing cover / oil pump / water pump (probably all 3 off those) but i thought a timing chain cover would be easier. looks just as daunting a task as taking the head off because it tells me to take the head off and more.

am i wrong?

Well, F!

I was just feeling good about how the truck has been running lately, took it for a pizza, 4 miles to and 3.75miles back......what about the other 1/4 mile?????

Came to a stop sign, truck stalled. it's an automatic. i thought WTF was that for? started right back up. near full tank of gas, so it's not that. kept going about another mile noticed it was getting boggy...like it wanted to shut down...rolled through the next stop sign in neutral (live in the sticks, don't need no stinkin' stop signs) and it was feeling real boggy. next stop sign (had to stop for this one) and it shut off. Temp gauge at just over 1/2. could see my house....put it in neutral and coasted safely onto the side......called home, wife came down with the kids......hooked on the only strap i had (an old webbing tie-down) told the wife "slow-slow-slow!!!", not slow enough and snapped it, tried it next with a friggin' dog tie-out cable (because right now i have no G-D idea where my tow strap is), snapped those (2) also and now she's yelling at me! went to my neighbor's, borrowed a tow strap, pulled it home (in the dark thank goodness to save some embarassment) and drifted it into the yard. That's where she'll be for a while too.
Bleeder, Olharleyman........if you're feeling extra generous and pitiful, come on up!
Radiator is sucked dry (had actually checked it(full) about an hour earlier after the suggestion about the timing chain)......so i figure my Thermagasket patch blew and siphoned everything (water, no antifreeze...and had no issue before tonight with just water for the last 5 months) into the engine.
so i'm done..........for now. gotta take break and stop obsessing with this.........gotta bank some money and do this the right way............

right now it's going to be a matter of money. if i had the money a year ago i would have fixed it the right way......for now gonna focus on finishing the summer with the kids, appreciating what i have and saving my pennies to do this the right way.still, i probably would like to do it myself.the way it sits now, can't possibly f it up more than it is.but it's all gotta wait for the $$$$$.

went oustside just a few minutes ago and it started right up......still quiet too, so hopefully i didn't destroy anything too bad. i had to re-position it in the yard so it didn't look so pitiful. radiator looks dry...be curious to see how much if anything is in it. took the oil cap off and it has foam that looks like one of those fancy coffees.....that's bad right? (kidding!)
wife bitchin' about it......going on vacation (OCMD>>>>Olharleyman....you should know what that means) in 2 more weeks....concentrating on that right now time and money wise....once the kids go back to school may start working some overtime to get the $$$ to do the right fix.
if someone could give me a clue how to post pictures,i will, i'd love to. i have photobucket but i can't seem to make any pictures appear the several times i tried. i see all these threads with awesome pics and i want to post some of my own.

Believe it or not I have only been to OC one time and was not really impressed it's just a money pit hell the money your going to spend there would be more then enough to rebuild your truck lol.

As for photobucket load your pictures into your album page Next find the pics you want to share and check them , then go to the bottom of the page and hit generate html and img code , once you do that go to the third option img for message board , copy the code inside the box paste it in your post here and it will show up as a picture here.
like this

[IMG]http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x275/fifty5panhead/BWPDU2kKGrHgoH-CYEjlLl9odTBKWjRL-1.jpg

I did take a few things out so you can see the code and not the pic so you get an idea of the code to paste here

in my world i would probably save the $$$ and stay the hell home. the kids love it though and haven't been on vacation in 3 years!!!!!!!!! so it's been a long time coming. we built a gigantic house almost 4 years ago and honestly, replicated some of our favorite features from some of the condo's we stayed in so that ,and i quote, "could feel like we're always on vacation" and not just trying 1 week a year to feel relaxed. it works too....the beautiful area we built has a panoramic view for miles and miles.....and central a/c helps too. just need a pool though....but the neighbor has one and that's FREE!!!

i'm uploading pics to photobucket on my laptop as we speak......so i will probably mess around with that later.......today is payday for me so bills to pay etc,etc,etc...so not much messing around today.
