22re Rebuild with low compression
I borrowed a compression gauge from O'Rillies today to check out the compression on my 22re. The results were as follows
Cylinder 1 -> 120psi
Cylinder 2 -> 110psi
Cylinder 3 -> 110psi
Cylinder 4 -> 120psi
I was shocked. Could it really be this low after a rebuild? The book says it should be about 171. What can I do to see if the gauge is bad or if my rebuild is crap.

Test it with another car with a known compression range. Sometimes you lose a little compression when you rebuild with a larger gasket. The difference you're seeing in cylinders is kinda wierd, but close to the standard deviation.

Sure a little compression with a rebuild but 50psi is huge. I could run the compression gauge longer next time. Maybe it wasn't maxed out. The engine seemed to have turned over about 5 times before I stopped.

No did not block the throttle wide open (Did not see that on any instructions I read)
No I did not remove all the spark plugs. I unscrewed each spark plug screwed in the gauge and turned over the engine. Then replaced the removed plug and move onto the next.
Will it make a big difference if I remove the plugs from the remaining cylinders? (I Could see how it could allow air to pass easier through the open cylinders and not create a back pressure the other cylinder has to work against.. maybe....)

hmm...
nope, not an idiot...
that step 2, and 5(b) in the FSM always seems to claim its victims...
... you're just too obsessed with getting it right?

(kinda of a repost as my threads are getting cross chatter)
Well Gents I am happy to report good news
After following the real manual
Cylinder 1 = 165
Cylinder 2 = 165
Cylinder 3 = 170
Cylinder 4 = 170
Keep in mind there is an extra thick head gasket on. I might have been able to eeek out the last 5 psi on 1 and 2 if I turned over the engine a couple more times. Overall I am happy. I set the TPS and she prrrs. Oh and I added an external tach. It sits on the vent grill just below the windshield. Very handy.

IIRC, (if I remember correctly) tolerance is 10%... so....
highest is 170, so worst should be no less that 153... and your worst is 160, so you pass that.
We also have to consider that compression tests depend on consistent valve adjustments (all have to be adjusted the same).
but you say she purrs....
you're happy?
if so, better say something or I think thook is gonna go licking postage stamps or something

Abe: So happy!!! Now I can finish the user guide to pull a 22re. But the dang TO bearing will have to come out sometime... after Christmas.
I think thook is always licking something. The name 'Thook' is very neanderthal to me. "Me thook, build engine, lick food, all good."
