Is it possible to R&R the blower motor without removing the HVAC box in a 1st gen 4Runner? I can get to the bolts but wasn't sure if the fan cage would give enough clearance to actually get it out.

yea i got mine out mo problem, auto zone has new ones for about 30 bucks and it works pretty good.

Yes it is possible just take it easy because the plastic squirrel cage will have some pressure on it coming out.

If you get to rough they can break.

I remove the kick panel to get as much room as possible .

If you are replacing a motor may as well do the blower motor resistor then it is all good to go for another 20 years

i remembered i had a decent picture from my thread on replacing the carpet. remove the glove box, and it drops straight out the bottom. three screws hold it in place.

Yep, it does come out. One of the 3 screws is a little hard to get to, but other than that, it comes out easily (the entire motor and fan cage as a unit):

Then you can separate the motor and fan cage.

I need to do this to mine now that its getting really cold, lol. The only way I get air flow out of the vents is set it to fresh and drive faster!

you can try and fix it. I cleaned mine up and replaced the brushes but it still didnt work too good so got the autozone one and it works like a champ.

A universal joint on your ratchet will come in handy.

Just take the box off too, then remove the motor once its out. Its only another 3 or 4 bolts. Ive had to get at it in my 87 and in my 92 (they are the same) to remove mice nests. Removing the whole box is much easier than trying to get thats 3rd screw in the back. And remember that you have to put it back in too.

you got one from autozone? is it quiet? like dead silent? mine works fine, but has that zzzz ticking sound at low speed which is annoying when the radio's low. i already cleaned leaves out of it but it didn't help so i suspect its a bearing.

I knew a guy who had an old Taurus that sat on his farm and didn't get driven much. We were using it in a paintball game and someone turned on the fan and it actually killed the rats inside and cut them up releasing a horrid smell.

We had to vacate the car for a while.

Ok. So I got the blower out - wasn't too difficult with the hvac box in. The new one has a self assemble wire harness plug, and it can be wired either way to run the fan in either direction. So now my question is, which of the factor wires was the + and the - so I can reassemble this thing? (86 4Runner) Thanks again!

Nevermind. I soon realized that the new motor came with an instruction sheet showing how to interpret what direction the fan should run by looking at the squirrel cage. Ready to go back in!

That would be possible however the fan is definitely spinning slow on all speeds despite a new resistor. Puzzled, and really need heat and defrost this time of year.

Does it spin faster if you apply power directly to the motor terminals? If so, it might be your fan switch is stuck on one of the lower speed settings internally or has a burned out high speed contact, so that it is running in a slower speed. To confirm, you could check the voltage at the motor terminals when connected to the factory harness and if it is much less than 12 volts, that might be your issue. The switch works by shorting out segments of the resistor to make the motor run faster. At highest speed, it bypasses all the resistor segments and should give you a full 12 volts:

I'm suspecting the switch as well. I have 4 speeds of incremental slowness. It was almost midnight and below freezing when I got it in last night. Going to test it tomorrow in daylight.
