1987 4runner stalling and does not idle
Whats up everyone, I thought i would join this forum.
Im now a proud owner of a 1987 4runner 22RE automatic.
I bought it needing some work
It keeps stalling when i stop or slow down .
Its hard to start in the morning. but once it starts it idle's ok but not great.
I can put it in gear without stalling (its a automatic)
Then after it runs for a few minutes it stalls and will not idle.
when it stalls it is hard to start back up.
But if i let it sit for a few minutes it will fire right back up.
It does run ok as long as i keep my foot on the gas.
The guy i got it from said that it over heated and crack the head
So he took it in the shop and had it fixed
They put a New head, timing chain, water pump and radiator .
I have check for intake leak's (none)
It has a new fuel pump
Timing is good
The idle is set fine
EGR checks out ok
Anyone know what it could be ?
Thanks

Thanks for the replys,
Ya i check that stuff still no luck.
It runs fine when its cold but after it warms up for a few minutes it just dies.
Then i have to let it set for a few minutes before it will start back up.

I'm having similar problems:
It's an '87 4runner 22r-e, standard. I start it up and it will not idle unless I push down the gas a little. When I do, it will run fine, but with my foot off the gas, it refuses to idle and just dies. I referred to my haynes manual but apparently I missed whatever I was supposed to see.

If you check engine light is on, try the 02 sensor, my 89 22re 5-speed, ran like crap untill I got the o2 sensor replaced, also take a look at the catalytic converter, that may also be the problem!

Thanks everyone for the reply's,
well i fixed it. The guy i got it from just had a brand new head put on it, so i thought everything was cool with that. But i guess the auto mechanic that did the work for him was to dumb to adjust the valve's. They were all way to tight
so i made the right valve adjustment and it runs great now ...
ha ha ha im fired-up now for some 4wheel fun this weekend....

check your intake tube that goes from your throttle body to the air cleaner box
for any cracks.
most of the time they crack by the throttle body where the tube bends and check all your vac lines too.

Go GET a compression check on it i had similar symptoms and i had under 50 psi in 3 of my 6 cylindars after buying brand new ported and polished heads with larger stainless steel valves I never thought it would be that my heads were bad after buying new ones but it was there was the valves werent sitting right on the valve seats so run a compression and that will give you an answer if its the valves or piston rings.
