I pulled the 22r and tranny as a unit out of a '84 4x4. I'm trying to get the tranny seperate from the engine, but something seems to be hung up in the pilot bushng or something. I have the tranny out about 1/2", and it's just stuck. Am I missing something?

just keep pulling, if all the bolts are out it should come off.

When I pulled my 250,000 mile tranny from the 250,000 mile engine, it was mud welded together and I just had to pull, wiggle, and curse alot for it to split. Just keep at it.

Put pickle forks at the 3 & 9 o'clock position and poped it free. Thanks!

hung up on one of the dowel pins or the stud for the starter? sometimes they just don't want to seperate.

Speaking of the pilot bearing, is there a way to pop that thing out without the special puller?? I can't find anybody who will sell or lend me one.

Another cheap trick is to get a bolt that very tightly fits the hole of the bearing (I think it takes an 18mm but can't remember for sure), fill the hole completely with grease (from a grease gun), and tap the bolt hard with a rubber mallet being careful to hit the bolt squarely. Might take a few refills of grease and is a little messy, but works well in a pinch. You might need to tap the bearing just lightly with a socket of the same size if the bearing has been in for a very long time (and is corroded and stuck).

What worked great for me was an old extension from my ratchet.It fits perfectly. I just filledthe space behind the pilot bearing with wheel bearing grease and tapped the extension in and the whole thing came out.

i spent 2 hours and broke a little puller before someone turned me onto this idea. 3/8" extension and full of grease, w/hand pressure pushing it in, the bearing popped right out. hydraulic pressure is amazing

i used a wood dowel wrapped with duct tape to make sort of a seal packing(is there anything that stuff can't do?). worked awesome! i was a little skeptical at first, but after repacking the pilot hole a few times, it popped loose!

Wow, great ideas!! I was talking to my buddy and he said he bought one years ago and only used it twice. After an hour of digging he found it. Worked great, and he was glad it got some use. Now I need to do what I have been dreading about since the beginning.....stabbing the tranny back in.
