Is this Normal???
'85 p/u w/ 22R Weber Carb / Mallory Ignition / RV Cam, 4" lift, 33x12.50, 4:56 Gears. Engine has about 600 miles after a rebuild.
Low end torque is awesome.
Here is the problem. Top end sucks. Once I get to 4th gear, there is no power. Any slight grade on the highway and I can't even maintain 60. RPM will not exceed 2000-2500. The timing is set correctly, at least I am 90% sure it is.
Also, gas mileage is terrible. No leaks. My full size chevy does better w/ V-8.
Please tell me this isn't normal. I really don't feel like spending the money on a V-6 conversion.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Are you sure the carb is properly jetted for the engine and its not running to rich ?, what about your timming, you said that you think its right, you need to make sure. with the electronic ignition your running have you played with the plug gap to see if that makes any difference ?, a little more gear might help also, like 4.88 gears.

My truck was the same way awhile ago, excellent torque but no top end power and it had all the goodies too.
I then later found that my timing on the cam sproket was off a tooth. I fixed it and it had way better power after that.
Did you check the timing yourself or did a certified mechanic did it?
