Installing a new carrier with the same gears

A buddy of mine upgraded his LS to a full locker and gave me the LS.
It already has good bearings on it, and I have a spare diff that is set up.

Can I pull the carrier, remove the ring gear, put it on the LS carrier and put it back in? Will it still be setup good if I use all the same shims and clock the adjusting nut the same number of turns?

Will I still need to check runout and backlash? I will at least check the pattern, but didn't know if everything will be needed since I'm staying with the same gears.

Sorry for the newb qustion, but I've never set up a diff before and all the instructions I've found are for regearing.

TIA

I have looked on his site before and it was very helpful, but again I only read the new gear installs and didn't see the same gear installs.
I just found one of his installs that explains exactly what I'm asking.
Thanks
