Good tire size for stock 22re?

I just bought an 85 4Runner about a month ago. Right now it has 31x10.5x15 tires on it and i was curious how much larger people have gone on the stock engine. I was wanting to get 33" super swamper boggers on there but im not sure if it has quite enough power for those to drive on the street or highway.

looks like a nice little 4runner. I've got 31's on my 89 22re but if you're gonna go 33's then you'll want to regear most likely. I've got 33's on my 89 3.0 and its lacking a lot of power now

Ooh i also forgot to ask about lockers. I was looking at getting detroit lockers front and rear, but i know nothing about them. How are they on the street? Would it be like Tomei LSD i have in my 240sx which is like 100% lock, loud and obnoxious when it allows slip, and tears up tires whenever i drive it... or would it not be so bad on the road more like an LSD u would find in a car from the factory if u guys know what i mean. This is my DD as well so i want to keep it drivable for the street.

I'd stick with the 31's till you can re-gear. As for the detroits, from my experience they are not loud at all and do not chew up tires. I have a Detroit in my daily driver and I really don't notice a difference on road unless I'm turning very sharp.

i have an 85 4runner with 33's... its alright for tooling around town but if you get on the highway...FORGET IT!..... its a dog... it needs gears

I would stick with the 31's unless you regear. One other consideration; you are likely to need a suspension lift to clear the 33's without rubbing (or body but I wouldn't recommend that solution).

I am running 31" BFG MT's and I plan on regearing to 4.56 when I install lockers front and rear....and that's with a brand new engine.

My rebuilt 22RE will turn 37s at highway speeds easily but that is regeared and it turns 40s now easy on the trails.

31s is as big as you want to go with stock gears and without a lift of some kind.

Get whaveter locker in the rear and a selectable in the front.

I'm running 33X12.5's on my stock 22R Carb's motor in the '84. It turns them fine on the trail and on the road, haven't hit the highway yet though.

or save your 31's for the street and use your boggers for the dirt. the boggers will last much longer trust me , i did this on another truck & my boggers were still looking brand new after 3 1/2 yrs. till i had to sell them .but the boggers are a softer compound thats why i did that. oh yea you'll need another set of wheels too but steel wheels are cheap. go with a detroit too.

i dont think i'd have the funds to get a selectable locker for the front. How bad is it to have a detroit up front too? Also, I have to use 4wd in the snow a lot here and i could see it creating problems with understeer. Has anyone here tried that before?

Given the proper gears for the size tire you want to run, the 22RE will do fine. 4.88 or 5.29 for 33s is a good match. For snow driving, I found the Detroit TrueTrac up front worked very well with a Detroit SoftLocker in back. The TT was easy to steer and even on slippery snow and ice, it let the front tires steer just fine:

I have ARBs front and rear now and that is a nice setup, but since it is on or off, I sometimes miss the "always there" nature of the TrueTrac. I have a similar gear driven limited slip in my VW (a Quaiffe) and I just love it. Very smooth and really works well.

kind of a noob question. What is a lock right locker and how does it work? Are they worth getting for the kind of use i would be doing?... which is like weekend four wheeling and using it for a daily driver as well

I have a lockright in the front of my truck and it works fine. They get a bad rap but I havent had any problems so far.

You can clear 33x9.5 tires with your stock suspension with very minor fender trimming. You will not use 5th on the highway unless you re-gear it.

If you are going to put detroit lockers in, it would be a good time to put gears in also, because the detroit replaces the stock housing. You could put a lockrite or aussie locker in for cheap. They aren't as bulletproof as the detriot, but are very reliable.

I agree that an LSD like the True-Trac is a good option for the front. I have detriot lockers front and rear, and it is a bit sketchy around town.

One thing to keep in mind is that you want to build your rig once, don't buy parts that you know will have to be replaced in the future, spend a little more now, and save a lot later.

I rock 33x12.5 on stock height, just had to chop out a bit of the fender and give the fender well a few love taps with a sledge...
Highway driving isn't ideal though, sometimes I hit the speed limit going down hill
If your daily driving is mostly in town you should be fine.

ive ran 31s 33s and now 35s on my stock 22re with 4.10 gears. yes its my DD and do ALOT of highway drivin. i found that with 33s, on the interstate 4th gear woul dbe pushin to high RPMs and 5th gear it was a dog and bogged down. but with 35s, i dont use 5th gear. in 4th gear i can cruise 70MPH as long as i dont let off the gas. on steep grades i may drop to 60-65, but normally no less. 5th gear is useless though. 4th gear is perfect for 40-75MPH. so what im tryiing to say is i woudl rather run 35s on stock gears then i woudl 33s
