Well, i think i am looking at replacing my timing set. I have a motor with very low miles but it sat for a long time. Been having valvetrain issues then I checked the timing chain and noticed that it was loose during part of the rotation and the timing gear on the bottom end of the motor did not look so good. I like to work on my truck but I am definatly not comfortable trying do this myself. What is the general price range for timing work on a 22re and what should be done? Thanx

go to a shop and ask em. rates vary from city to city from state to state.

your looking at anywere from $500-$1000 depending on your shop/rates parts etc

Found an old receipt from the previous owner of my truck. He paid $1350 for the timing chain replacement along with a new head gasket.

I did my timing chain myself a few thousand miles ago, it really wasn't that hard. If you're mechanically inclined you should be fine.

Thanks everyone. I am really thinking of doing it myself cuz it would save a ton of money. Im a noob but I bought this truck to learn a bit. It looks like I can find all the parts for less than $100 depending on what all I want to do. I got a quote on labor today for $488. That was based on $40/hr and 12.2 hours listed by hanes. My valves are really noisy also, I dont believe anything is bent or broke cause its been like this a while and hasn't gotten any worse. This is probably caused by the timing right? The motor only has 84K so I really dont want to pull the head. Can I get by with just pulling the oil pan?

I did mine without removing pan or head. Search for a couple how to do it articles. Senior citizen with no previous Toyota experience and hadn't been inside an engine in 27 years.

Mine had 150,000 miles and death rattle on startup. Cover was grooved heavily, but not through to the coolant, and the drivers side chain guide was missing quite a bit of it. Not a fun job, but mostly just grunt work. Factory service manual is helpful for diagrams.

I just did the timing chain, water pump and oil pump.. It was great learning experience.. i just had to keep myself organized.. The big trick is to remember the hidden bolt in the valve cover and take your time.. 4Crawler has a great writeup and an excellent site and resource..
