Question Breaking in a new Lift

I am soooooooo close to getting this pieced together. One question I had was this:

Is it better to run a week or two without shocks to help the springs settle in or should new shocks be run immediately when the lift is installed??

Thanks!

John

That is what I thought too! I have always installed shocks when lifting a truck. However, I have heard and read that some people have had a tough time with the springs settleing in and it has been suggested not running shocks until they settle a bit. I don't mean going out wheeling without shocks, just Daily Driving. It just seemed that the shocks may prolong the settling of the new springs.

Thanks!

Install the shocks and go wheel and that will settle them the fastest or DD it a month and they might settle.

Mine is going to get broken in at Moab at the end of the month. The truck will hopefully get done in the next 15 days, driven onto a trailer, taken to Moab and wheeled for a solid week. I hope everything works out

This is how my 4Runner is sitting in the garage as of right now! Aussie lockers are sitting on my workbench needing installed and front axle still needs Longfields installed and everything from the spindle out put on. No brakes, no shocks yet

So, 84-4Runner, are you going to wheel with or without shocks?

I too have the TG 4" front springs and Superlift 3.5" rears. I will be throwing on a 6" shackle in the back to compensate and I know I am into this for about $650 now with about $400 more to spend. I just didn't want to get some crap shocks and then get Billy's down the road. I would like to let the springs settle with some Daily driving and then put in some Billy's about 2 weeks after the lift is installed.

Are you going with the Shock hoops or reusing the mounting for the stock location? (It looks like you have the stock towers cut off.)

I would not drive it with out shocks. When I didn?t have any shocks on the back of my runner, I couldn?t get above 15mph. A little bump would make the rear start bobbing making it extremely difficult to control the truck. This was on 20 year old springs. New springs may be stiffer and not bob as much but I still would not recommend DD without shocks.

Look into getting the ford shock towers. I think there only $12 from the dealer.

Not a fan of the Ford shock towers as they are inadequately braced IMO and I've seen several ripped right off the frame. I've yet to see a shock hoop with braces do so.

My 2 cents.

With shocks, for sure! I am using a tall set of shock hoops (braced of course) from TG with 14 Bilsteins.

Cool! Thanks for the update guys! I am going to look into either some Billy's or some Dostech (sp?) as the D's are about $30 less a shock and I got to save up for tires, rims, gears....shesh!! LOL

Every penny counts (no pun intended!) right now!

My 2 cents.

Add some bracing to them or gussets, should work.
