I fought the same brake light problem. It ended up being the fuse which had corrosion on it. I ended up pulling every fuse in the block cleaning the blades and putting dielectric on em all. The thing that threw me off was that i tested fuses through the little continuity spots on the top of the fuse they were fine but the problem was the blades. Just my .02

I had the same problem on my 90 4Runner & replaced the brake light switch and other parts to no avail.
One of the wires going to the brake light switch was broken somewhere. We ran a wire from the fusebox straight to the brake light switch and that fixed it.
Good luck!

Thanks guys i'll focus some attention back on the fuse box.
Yeah running a wire will be my last resort. but it sounds like that is not to far away.
I have no proof that it happened after the paint job, i noticed it after the paint job. The reason i don't bring it back to them and tell them to fix it is it's my DD. Plus i'm doing the front axle and timing chain this weekend. Maybe next week...if i can arrange a ride.. what a PITA.
Thanks for the help...
