adjust your valves? intake valves that are too tight won't close all the way and will cause a backfire.

good luck to you carolina yota! i had been fighting this same issue for the last 4 months with no luck. i finally decided my time wasn't worth it and put a for sale sign in it and sold it in 2 hours. hopefully the valve adjustment will work for you if it does i will relay the info to the guy that bought mine. have a great day!

Have you had the distributer out? I have seen warped distributer shafts cause some problems like this before, but never on a toyota. Maybe worth a look?

is this on shutdown or when accelerating?

if its under throttle, then the above responses would be my first guess.

it its when you shut off the ignition then it could be carbon buildup, fast idle...

one of my 22r carbs was sucking air through the throttle plate shaft... the bushing was wiped out and it was dieseling pretty bad till I pulled it off and trashed it for a Weber 380
