Another Gas Mileage question
Ok, so I finally took the time to calculate the approximate gas mileage for for my truck, and, with the hubs locked in 2wd, I was only getting 12.375 MPG in town travel. Given that the hubs weren't free, I expected a low number, especially since its a 22R, but 12 MPG just seems kind of outrageous. Can anyone give me some insight as to how accurate this number is given the circumstances?
It might also be helpful to mention that the air filter is in desperate need of changing, as is the fuel filter.

Your truck looks to have larger than stock tires. That could be a major factor, also the fact that your speedo/odometer is also off with larger tires. What are you getting without being locked in?

Once again, i wish I could find that formula to figure the difference with different tire sizes....I found it just a few weeks ago to. Didn't bookmark it or write it down, and now i lost it.

But at least now you know the explanation. The 12 miles that your odometer says you're getting on a gallon of gas is probably more like 14 or 15.

I'm gonna calculate the mileage without the hubs locked next time I fill up. I'm running 31x10.50s, so that is a bit of a factor. Thanks for the input, guys.

Ok, well if you had stock 235s, or whatever they were, and you go up to 31's, take the miles you went on the tank and add 10% of the amount to it. say you went 200 miles on the tank, add 20 miles to that, THEN divide by the gallons. And that will give you an accurate reading.

I figured it a long time ago, but it will be correct for any yota that had 235's and 4.10s stock, and now has 31s and 4.10s.
I will have to adjust it when I regear as it will change again. I'll look it up again soon.

I have a stock 1985 4 Runner, 22RE and I have 325/60 15's (31x12.50 15) tires on it. I have a 12-13 gallon tank (it take to fill when needle below E) and I can get 195 miles on the trip odometer. I fill up and I add 12.4 gallons, add the 10% for a total of 214.5 miles driven. I hand calculate 17.4 MPG on the Runner in 2WD without the Hubs locked. Stock gears.
Considering your a 22R, how dirty is the carb? I would think those #'s are pretty close considering all the things you listed as being needing attention or wrong.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me. Then again this is a 1985 4Runner we are talking about here. I am not sure of the exact specifications of the Tank, I just know how many gallons it takes to fill it when the gas gauge reaches 'E'. I do have a SR5 cluster on the truck, it originally came w/o the full instrumentation, however if memory serves me right it always been that way (the gallons to fill it when on 'E'.)

I had the same question a little bit ago and have been adding 10% to my total mileage also. Just a random question thoough, why would you drive around town with your hubs locked if your not in 4wheel drive?

84-89 4runners have a 17.2 gal tank. At least my 87 does, and I'm pretty sure its the same for all standard cab pickups of the same years. The extended cabs have a 18. something.

Toyota reccomends it once a month for like 10 miles to lubricate the front end components. I also do this for weeks at a time during winter so I can shift on the fly during snowy seasons.

to chime in with maybe relavent info, with my 1989 3.0 and the 35-12.50 MTRS, running 4.10 gears I have found that the odometer reads 8.1 km for 10 km travelled. Filled up, drove approx 80 km hiway, running around 100-110 km/hr (actual), filled up again. Calculated 13.6 l/100km, or 20 mpg (imp)
