85 22rec gutless, fuel dumping
i have a 85 22rec engine that is gutless when taking off or increasing the gas. when i take off, i let the clutch out and down in the gas, the engine bogs and i have to let off the gas some and it levels out. my exhaust was over heating (turning orange!). there is not Cat. convertor to cause it. i have replaced the front of the engine(hole in the chain cover), the O2 senser, all 4 injecters, the timing is on the money, it starts alittle rough, but once warmer the engine is good. what can cause this to happen? i'm lost as to what to do. short of changing the air flow meter ($250+). any ideas i would love to hear. thanks for the help.

Test the Air Flow Meter and Throttle Position Sensor:

Also make sue there is vacuum at the line running to the fuel pressure regulator and check the intake for any cracks/holes in the rubber boots. Then make sure the EGR valve is not sticking open and that the EGR modulator is plumbed correctly.

the fuel filters are all new, just changed out when these started. the Rad is clean and flowing good. engine runs at good temp and i have good pressure. i took the ERG valve off today and checked and cleaned it (it's only a year old). as for the cat. converter, there isn't one. i gutted it out over a year ago. i checked the vac. line layout and all checks out with the haynes and chiltons manuals. this is kicking my butt, i'm running out of ideas, short of replacing EVERYTHING and paying twice the price i bought it for. any other ideas?

I don't think this was listed but try checking valve clearance. Mine would not idle at 750 until after I adjusted the valves. Also if there's an air leak after the AFM before the Throttle. I got an AFM from Amazon for $140 and then they let me return it. Good luck. It's probably not the AFM. Mine tested like it had bad spots but it still works fine. Maybe soemhow the Fuel pump sw in the AFM is not working right.Might check the Igniter has good ground too.
Yeah a stuck open EGR would probably cause this symptom.

well, here is an update. i think the timing chain may be off by a tooth or 2. i had replaced the front on the engine before this problem, and for the life of me i think i forgot to lineup the marks. or at least i couldn't tell you if i did for sure. i was told that if off by one tooth, i could have this problem and still think i have the idle and timing on. does anyone know if that is true? it makes perfect sense, if i could recall for sure i would disreguard the idea, but i'm not totally sure. so next move is to remove the front of the engine and reinstall the timing chain and all.

sounds like the water temp sensor, if reading the engine as cold is dumping fuel into it, engine will run rough, fuel in the exhaust burning, retarded timing, no power...The fix is like a $20.00 dollar sensor right on the front of the motor.I am going through this as we discuss this.
