In case you wanted sources..this is from summit racing.

Universal No
Make TOYOTA
Model PICKUP
Beginning Year 1984
Ending Year 1987
Engine Type L4
Liter 2.4
CC 2366
Engine Size 2.4L/2366cc
Engine Family Toyota 4-cylinder
Regulator Usage Stock

The replacement regulator you have should work just fine as long as it came out of an 84-87 pickup, 84-87 4runner, or an 84-85 celica.

I was under the impression that the 85's were the first year for EFI and that 1985.5 was when solid axle was no longer(except for a few months the sr5's still had them)

SOLVED

Just in case anyone ever reads this, I wanted to say the mystery was finally solved. Turns out the problem part was the fuel pressure DAMPER, not the REGULATOR.
Found an aftermarket damper for around $100 and now the truck is running fine. My original mechanic must not have known the difference, or because of English being his second language he was mixing up the words. They look similar and have similar-ish functions. But still, it's kind of shocking that he blew the call that badly.

Thanks for all the help, here.

I'm a girl and I can tell you from experience, your so called 'friendly mechanic' is trying to make a buck off your lack of knowledge. Because he is a 'friend' he feels guilty charging you a labor charge so he is trying to make up the difference by finding parts that cost an arm and a leg. I'd get a second opinion, just sayin............
