transmission switch help!
I am new to the yota tech world but love my toyotas! I have an 87 reg cab pick up 5spd 4wd 22r, and recently got a 83 pick up which is also a 4wd 5spd 22r. The guy said something about wolverine edition?? i hadnt heard of that but i need to know if i can pull the tranny out of the 83 and put it in the 87 of mine. Im interested in parting the 83 out later, after the tranny swap. Will the 83 tranny bolt up to my 87? if so is there any special i need to do for the switch? thanks guys

well why would you swap out your 87 tranny for the 83??? L-series tranny's are weak in my opinion. the tranny is also shorter so you'd have to move your crossmember forward like 3 inches.

well my 1st and 3rd gear sync. went out in the 87 and we got the other truck for a steal and was hopping maybe it could be a low budget switch and fix. Personally id like to have them both on and off road but the 83 needs a new motor. all the water is draining into the oil from a crack somewhere in the block i think... We thought it was a head gasket problem but after we replaced the gasket and had the head work done it was still doing the same thing. Im hoping i wont have to sell/part out the 83 because id really like to do a SAS to my 87 but thats a whole other world to me rite now. What all is involved in installing the Solid axel inplace of the IFS?

well i've never actually don't a SAS, but i own a SASed rig now lol. basically you cut off everything from the ifs. you can either buy a ifs eliminator kit or put one together yourself (that's what i'd do cause i like to play with springs but the kits are still a good price.) it's a good amount of welding, a lot of measuring and lots of time.

Uh....if your '83 is truly a Wolverine and it has a solid frame and good body, you are going about this ALL WRONG. Rebuild or swap out the motor for the 83 and start restoring/repairing it...or I'll give ya 500 bucks for it.

My 87 toyota was my daily driver/ first vehicle so id like to keep her on the road for as long as i can.the 83 also has an 89 bed on it. Gov't Mule, are there certian things on the truck that i can look for to verify if its a Wolverine or not? Either way i need one back on the road ASAP! haha thanks guys

Wolverines were 78 and earlier trucks converted to 4x4.
To put you l series 5 speed in your 2nd gen truck in addition to moving the crossmember forward as mentioned you will also need to shorten the front DS amd lengthen the rear, unless you get the 1st gen driveshAfts to work, than the only thing you would need to so is rear drill the pinion flanges to mAtch the small flange pattern of the 1st gen DS.
Oh and cut a hole in the tunnel for the gear shifts, since the L series will be closer to the TC selector

Sounds like I will probly just take the tranny out of the 87 before i take it to the shop to save money on labor. I hate to use my 83 for parts id rather see it fixed up and on the trails (wether I get to or someone else) know what i mean? My 87 is jumoing out of first and third, you cant even hold it in gear as i thought you could with sycn. i have already replaced the shifter bushings as i learned from here to do so and its still no change. Does this sound like a sync. to you guys?

One of my buddies had his '84 popping out of 1st on him, and when the local fab shop pulled it apart a bit to see what was messed up, it was the shift fork iirc. His was just 1st gear, but it still could be the same thing.
