I was looking at acme adaptors for the tdi engines. Just wondering if anyone has completed the swap on a first gen pickup truck??

Look up the deisel swap section. Go through the offroad fab and tech link.

A couple of guys have done it, I don't know why its not more popular, it seems like a worthwhile swap.

I've read where guys were getting mid 30's mpg pullin 33's.

The tdi is a really popular swap in the jeep world as well.

It really depends what engine you find, ALH and PDs are great how ever require lots of wiring.

I have a 2003 golf tdi and love it, it got a stage 1 tune and a stright pipe.
Rips, and gets 42 mpg no matter what, 51mpg on road trips.

Pd engines have the most power from the factory, but can have cam issues.

Alh are great, 90 hp from the factory, 130 ish tq I think

The older tdi Ahu I think are good and easy to find.

I am a TDI owner. My first was '03 Jetta with the ALH. I'd have kept that one (EXCELLENT engine) but it had the failure prone automatic transmission. I had a 2010 Sportwagon, but now I have a 2013 Passat TDI from the Chattanooga VW plant. It is the first domestically made (OK, assembled) TDI. 6 speed manual, it gets me 50+ mpg on the highway, and I am averaging just over 40mpg with ~90% city driving. It is nice and torquey.

But if you want to retrofit onto an ACME adapter, I recommend finding an ALH (90-93years) from a beetle, golf or jetta. The mechanical fuel pump is more dependable than later common rail fuel systems, easier to work on, and the rest of ALH is VERY dependable.

I was going to do a Toyota L engine conversion, but you just CAN NOT find parts for rebuild anymore. I gave up and I am just rebuilding the 22R. ALH would add tons of nice low end torque, but I just do not have the time/skills to make the swap.

I loved my alh in my jetta, .205 injectors, chip, vr6 clutch and I would break the tire loose in second gear, it was beat to hell and never gave up! However a lot of electronics are involved in swapping an alh, but the AAZ and AHU are great engine as well, easy to tweak for more power, and are almost all mecanical, they are more popular for swaps in toyotas and samurais.

My old man and I have been discussing a swap of this nature, BUT I doubt I'll be going with a VW donor. I loathe the idea of a timing belt, and those "special" pumps are ungodly expensive.
I'm thinking a kubota.
