you can search all of craigslist at one with this site

http://www.onecraigs.com/

You can also do a google search for "toyota factory service manual.pdf"
and find a free pdf of the factory manual. I think the copy out there is for a 1983 but will cover the 79-83 models you like.

Id try and find one as complete as possible to start with since you're all the way over there.

Any more questions?

Yeah don't go looking for one with the exact modifications you want. That will limit you too much. Look for a fairly stock one, no lift, then do what you want to it.

These trucks will fit 33 inch tires with NO lift. 4 inches is a lot of lift on these trucks, but if you buy one, it's your truck so do what you want...

Hard to tell in the first photo, but the truck in the second photo has no lift.

What is the towcapacity of the truck? Is there also a different between a 20R and a 22R on towingpower and the years?

I don't know how to those between a shortbed or a longbed. They are both very nice, how long is a shortbed and a longbed?

when I going to look for one when the time is right then I'll go to look for one to restore or little restoring to be done. Butt with a good base

something like this http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/cto/4197381215.html

this look is the one i like

Lots of parts here....ebay....craigslist.

Little more difficult for you due to the whole living in Europe thing.
These trucks are all over the world though.

Half the fun is the hunt for the part.

If you look at my album "My Toy" you will see the first generation truck stock body. Except for the louvered hood and paint it is original (I am the original owner and it is now 30+ years old). Since you live in Europe I would recommend the short bed truck because of turning radius.

The one in your photo you say you like is a longbed.

20R has slightly less power but no big deal. They're both good engines. The newer you go, the easier it will be to find parts. I have a 1978 with a 20R, and there are starting to be some parts that Toyota is discontinuing.

A longbed will ride a little nicer. Shortbed is really rough, because of the short wheelbase. But they both ride like tanks...

A light trailer with snowmobiles or four wheelers is ok for these trucks. And I've flat towed cars with my 1983 4x4. If you don't expect much out of them for towing...you won't be disappointed! It's actually pretty amazing what they can tow, but you won't be going fast, and the brakes aren't really up to the job unless you're very careful.

Light towing is best.

On this site in Newbie Tech Section, and on Pirate 4x4, there are pinned FAQ threads. These have all the basic information you'd want on these trucks, and then some. A lot of what you're asking is out there, and you can find it with a simple google search.

My sources for parts for both my 83 and 78 are: Toyota dealership, NAPA autoparts, Rock Auto (.com), JCWhitney...and if I can't find it there, I just start internet searching. The of course there are the classifieds on this site, on the Marlin Crawler forum, craigslist, and junkyards.

Hello brinky,

That's so cool that you like this style Toyota pickup! It's my favorite too! Definitely check out the classifieds here on YotaTech, YotaTech Classifieds, and as mentioned we've got a decent section too: Marlin Crawler Classifieds.

I don't have first hand experience on this, but from what I've heard most east-coast USA 1979-1983 4WD Hilux's (what we refer to as "1st gens" because this was the first generation of 4WD Hilux trucks Toyota offered in the USA) are rusted up and in poor condition. The closer to the Pacific you search typically the better condition the older Toyota trucks are in. The reason is probably because its dryer and warmer out here (except for states closer to Canada) so we have less or no snow which means less or no salt on roads or other types of damaging or rust-prone environments for vehicles.

I mention this because you are in the Netherlands ... and 80+% of forum activity here and on Marlin Crawler's site is from the USA. So you'll be shipping a lot of parts which would add up quick ... and beings that west coast has (potentially) a better selection to choose from you'll have to ship even further.

I don't know any info on towing ratings, and I agree with 83 that the power difference between a 20R and 22R won't break the deal for anyone. 5-speed transmissions became available in the US starting with 1981-model year trucks.

How about at home for you? How popular are the 1979-83 Toyota Hilux trucks? Are they a dime a dozen or (as I suspect) have most of them been crushed/recycled by now?

Looking forward to learning more from your part of the world! Thanks!

-BigMike
