question on lift with tire size

question on lift with tire size

I have a stock height 79 4x4 yota, bobed bed, with the 20r.
I'm going to put on rancho add a leafs on for 3inch lift, and putting in 5.11's and at some point also in stalling the 5-sp with 5sp transer case as well.

Will 35's fit or rub, and will the engine be able to turn them? I think I will also have to beef up the steering as well right?

First of all, Welcome to Yotatech. You'll find this is a great community with lots of information...which brings me to my second point.

Don't be afraid to use the SEARCH function. Tire size and lift questions come up every single day. Do a quick search and you'll find all the info you need.

First, there's no 5.11 gear for Toyota. 5.29 is common for 35's with 5 spd.
go to www.marlincrawler.com and look at lifts for your truck. By the way, 79 to 85 use pretty much the same suspension. 84-85 has a little better axle housing.

Yeah I got that up date last night that I have 5.29's. I will check out that site. The reason I ask is that the deal I got was as follows. I recived the power stearing set up, the axels with the gears, and welded rear, and locker in front, and the 5-spd with transfer case, and also the ranchro 3inch lift add a leaf, and now I have a deal on some 35's for 100 bucks I just want to know if the gears, stearing, and engine will handle the 35's and if they will scrub. This truck does not see any road, but it really is not built for anything just yet, just a TOY so it gets what it needs as I see fit to do so.

steering, as in I will not be able to turn too much or I will break/bend componets? What all should/needs to be done here?

Convert to high steer.

At the same time, get some 63" chevies from the junk yard (should be about 50 bones) and put them in the back, which will give you more than enough lift for 35's. Take your stock rear springs and put them in the front. This will give you lift, and shift your axle forward a bit, which will give you more clearance for the tires, and better approach angles.

I'll do a search here in a few, but I have no idea what high steer is, and if I move the axle forward do I need a longer drive shaft?

Yes you would need to have your drive shaft updated if you move an axle. (And don't move anything on the other side)

As far as steering goes, FROR (FrontRangeOffRoad.com) sells steering bracing kits that beef up your steering for stuff like this. (Hey Brian - WabFab, do you re-sell for Brian (FROR)?)

--35" tires--inspect them closely, they are $100 for a reason. I got a 'great deal' once on some 35" BFG MT's. bought them on a rainy day and did not see the age checks/cracks in them. out of the 4, I have 1 good one for a trail spare

High Steer: it replaces the stock SA push pull steering with an IFS (86-95.5) steering box and puts the tie rods above the axle/springs. Much better protections.

Depending on what kind of deals you find, it could cost you $400-500 to convert. you can do it cheaper finding good parts used.

I have a deal on a skyjacker drop drag link, will this help me out on the steering issue from the add a leafs and maybe body lift?

don't run add a leafs as your lift. it will ride like crap and your back won't be happy. like suggested, go with chevy 63's in the rear, maybe rears up front. its cheap and fairly easy if you can weld, or know someone that does.

The add a leafs, is what I got, and its not drivin daily for me to really worry about a "nice" ride. I have 4 kids and my wife stays at home with them, and I'm in the service, so the "toy" gets what I can. I recived the add a leafs for free, the 5-speed set up for free, and I paid 300 bucks for the other axels with the 3rds in them with the welded/lockers and 5.29 gears. All of which is waiting on being put in the truck. I have to see about some longer u-bolts and this steering issue. I've bobbed the bed, and the interior was shot when I got it built a custom tube back bumper, and going to make a front one soon. Its compleatly a toy, but still tabbed and if need be for a back up to my other 2 cars. I have a welder and I can weld it needs the eletrical figured out as I don't have head lights, the exaust needs done, but I think I'm going to do a stack to keep it out of water.

sorry so like I said I need to know about this drop drag link from sky jacker this guy has it and it seems to lower the steering down to allow the truck to be lifted??

The drop drag link just lowers the drag link down towards the axle. Its likely a drop pitman actually. It will not increase the strength of the system at all. It'll just keep your steering wheel pointed in the same direction as you had before the lift.

The stock steering on these trucks is notoriously weak, especially with lockers/big tires. If money is an issue, look around on the net, and I'm sure you can find spares for VERY cheap, as most people opt to go with the high steer set up.

Familiarize yourself with the system and keep tools in the truck to change it out, along with the spares.
