high idle when first starting 81' hilux/camper shell?

Hi, i'm new to the forum and have a couple questions.

I have an 81' yota pickup (short bed, 22r, two wheel drive) i've had for not quite a year. It's the first carbureted vehicle i've ever owned and i thought it may have something to do with why every time i start it, it idles high, like at around two grand or a little higher and soon after i drive around for about five to ten minutes it idles normally like at a thousand. Doesn't seem like a big deal, just would like an explanation as to why it does that.

Also, i've been looking for a camper top for it for a while now and can't find anyone or anywhere that can help me. Suggestions? Where to look? What to pay?

That's what it should do. Especially in the winter. Where are you located? That's meant to happen in order to get the engine up to operating temperature as quickly as possible, then drop down once it warms up, to the correct idle speed. Something things get a bit sticky and it idles waay too high, but probably 2000 and dropping to 1000 is more or less right. Should idle a bit below 1000 but not much. Yes, carburetor thing.

Camper shells can be either easy and cheap (or even free), or completely non-existent, depending on your location.

In Montana, I had to buy an aluminum shell (for $75) and cut it so it would fit. These beds are short. The pre-4wd (78 and earlier) shortbeds are longer than ours. Every model after our trucks are longer. When I drove newer ones, the toppers where interchangeable. They might not fit perfect, but the length was right. 93's would fit on 85's, etc. But nothing fits these beds except toppers that were built for them. And this body style was only around 4 years.

Anyway, seems like on the west coast, people can't hardly give them away. Around here, like I said, you just aren't going to find one unless you get really lucky. West coast I'd say from free to $150 is about right.

Thank you for the reply. I know what to ask for generally now. I'm in Baton rouge, Louisiana, and I'm not so sure that there is a wealth of toyota enthusiasts around here but i'll just keep looking.

That's what mine does too. It'll fast idle around between 2000 and 2500 then about 5 minutes later it'll kick down to a little less than 1000. I think I read that the factory setting was 2600 the fast idle high idle and 750 for normal. Mine is a new carb, so I have a little adjusting to do.
