I have the complete Drivetrain out of a 1987 Toyota Pickup (Carbed model), And I'm wanting to swap it into the place of my 20R the 20R is loose and it leaks oil from every point. The 22R i just had rebuilt it has 0 miles on it. I rebuilt the transmission and Transfer case while I was at it. I'm going to swap in the complete drivetrain Tranny/Transfer case and Rear axle. Can i use the 20R alternator on the 22R? Will i have to move the motor mounts?

i am not a expert but i think the lower alt. bracket is different , to my understanding the old alt. only put out 40 amps, so you would want on out of a 22re.

i am assuming that you are putting it in a 79-80??? truck. so, motor mounts should line up, but the 87 motor mount holes are about 1/4" wider than the 20r ones so you will just have to dremel them out. transfer crossmember will not be in the same place and the xmember will need to be moved back. also i would see what the 87 rear axle has for gears in it. if the 87 has 4.10s your 80 (if it is) might have the 4.37s in it. make sure the front axle and rear both have the same gears in them or you will be very pissed when you have to pull the rear axle and put the old one back in. the alt should fit but all depends on what you are doing for your ele. if it were me i would just buy a gm 1 wire and hook it up instead of the OE toyota.

wow your good at reading minds LOL! Its a 1980 Toyota Pickup, I'm trying not to have to splice my wiring its already horrible enough as it is. I'm was hoping to swap in the 20r alt so i wouldnt have to fool around with it not charging. Is the GM 1wire alt a easy bolt up mod? I my gear ratio is 4.37's and i already swapped out the Axle. it does look funny driving down the road with a narrow front end and a wide back end, Like a funny car.

OK, So i finally got the 22R in my Truck and found out for the most part its a Bolt-On Swap, other then when using the G52 Transmission you will have to make cross-member (the 87 G52/54 crossmember mount is Smaller about 2" Smaller). The 22R And the Stock 4 Speed bolted right up no problems.... I also found out that the 20R Distributer will work fine in the 22R so you can use the Stock Coil/Ignitor. (adding a little tech)

The engine is in and the tranny is bolted up (L43 4sp). Now i have a problem with the Alternator hook up. Can i Splice into the existing harness? The color of the wires is different from the 20R Alternator. I was thinking about going to a GM 1-Wire Alt but I Can no longer find a GM 1-Wire bracket anymore, I Thought i had a source but He stopped making them. Any input would be appreciated.
