18r stalling issue

G'day
Im having some dramas with my Gen1 Hilux
(has a 18r POWERHHOUSE), its starts ok in the morning and you can keep it running ok but as soon as you back off it will stall and you have to wait for the fuel bowl to fill up 15seconds if anyone is wondering
i pulled it off the road today and replaced plugs, leads and dizzy cap and rebuilt the carb (standard 18r carb) it goes better now but still dose the stalling thing, so during the week i plan to rebuild fuel pump(is it rebuildable??), new fuel filter and if that dosnt work ill put new jets in it. is there anything else i have missed?

cheers guys

and heres a pic of the beast!!!

um, clog somewhere down the line? I'd also check to see how much the pump is moving(fluid) just manually pump the lever, and feel how much air it moves. by the way, just how long is that bed? I have a 6 footer, and I only got two tie down hooks

Definitely a long bed. But here in the states, I've never even seen them with more than 3 on either side.

You can test the fuel pump pressure output if you have the tools to do it...I don't so I can't help with that. I would definitely say though that if you rebuilt the carb correctly and the issue is still happening, and it's definitely a fuel issue, then it's either the pump, filter, or fuel lines. Filter is super cheap and easy, pump is super easy and pretty cheap (here at least, $100 from dealership, $50 from Napa), and fuel lines are cheap, just more of a pain to find where the clog could be.

Nice truck!

Sounds like the diaphram on the fuel pump is going out to me. It could also be a small air leak int he fuel line somwhere. I'd replace the fuel filter, check and double check the hoses for cracks, etc. If that does not do it, then look into the fuel pump. It is a mechanical fuel pump, right?

got the fuel issue sorted now, still running like thou done the timing and cheaked everything, im thinking now about valve timing gunna pull the rocker cover off tommorow for a look, rang around today and found a running 18R engine for 440 bucks might just save up for that.

and yea looong tray (7ft) fits 3 bikes and gear easy.

So what is it doing?

Was it ever running good or did you buy it running crappy or what? Is this a new thing? If all the spark stuff is new, timing is good, carb and pump and filter are good (what did the fuel issue end up being?), check emissions stuff, exhaust....compression?

fuel issue was a ed pump, and yea this is a new truck(to me) got it running really good now ended up being spark plug gap, i assumed they where good becouse they where new and for an 18R but they where way out. I got a roadworthy today it passed ok and i asked him(mechanic) about the stalling and he said replace the condensor and mabey the coil aswell should fix the problem, just got to wait till payday now!

So it just randomly stalls? Or when you're just idling?

it drives good cant fault it(apart from being thirstier than my v8 chev), untill ya stop it, like at stop signs and stuff. it stalls unless ya keep revving it as you downchange and also while its stopped. also if it stalls ya cant start straight away, it just winds over dosnt even kickand ya have to let it sit for a minite or so then it starts fine. but the weird thing is when ya start it cold, it starts easy and idle's good.

Have you ruled out the carb flooding? Beyond that I don't know.

I only know the stock settings for an '83...and before this thread I had never heard of an 18R so I'm not sure. Check this site out & see if it helps. http://www.bluebassdesign.com/boonin/carb_faq/ It really only talks about 22Rs, though. Flooding isn't really a carb adjustment issue though, right? It's more like something is sticking or needs rebuilt or is done wrong.

THe 18R was a very common motor in the 70's Celicas. I happen to have a Clymer shop manual right here in front of me for 1971-1981 Celicas. To start, I'll list float adjustment and tuning procedures to start here. (I lost my camera). If you require anything else, just PM me as I'm not in the pre-84 forum that often.

THe trouble shooting section suggests that engines with excessive fuel consumption have an overrich mixture. Check idle mixture, idle speed, and choke operation (is it disengaging). This also includes leaky floats and worn out needle valves. So, did the rebuild kit include needle valves and float?

FLOAT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT (18-RC engine)

1) Hold the airhorn upside down . Measure the distance from the airhorn surface to the float. Distance should be 5mm(0.2in). Adjust as necessary by bending the tab that rests on the needle valve.

2) Turn airhorn over. The gap between needle valve and float tabs should be 1mm(0.039in). Adjust as necessary by bending the tabs that rest on the float stopper.

If the float thing checks out and your needle valve is new, I'd start looking over the choke. And also vacuum lines. I have information for all of that so lemme know what you need.
