Want to Build Your Own Back to the Future 4×4? Here’s How!

Marty McFly truck

The 1985 custom Toyota Pickup truck Marty McFly first spots in Back to the Future has become an iconic character in its own right.

Few vehicles have left such an impression on pop culture as the 4×4 truck Marty McFly first spots in the original Back to the Future. Heath, of the Heath’s Garage YouTube channel, recently took a 1985 Hilux SR5 4×4 and transformed it into the beloved truck we all know and love. From the bed conversion to the interior color matching, no stone was left unturned.

Deconstruction

Upon first look, you’ll see that this Hilux is in remarkably great shape. To be honest, I’m a little sad to see the paintwork and decals get stripped away. The blue and white scheme looks incredible. But, if you’re going to replace it with anything, the Marty McFly truck styling is just about the best option out there.

One of the first real issues you see with this rig, however, is the radiator. It looks awful. A simple finger stroke made it look as if a tiny Godzilla had rampaged through its already rusty coils.

With a special stripe removal wheel, Heath gets to work on the body of the Hilux. I certainly don’t envy him in this task. It takes a considerable amount of time, but the end result is a clean surface. That same clean surface translates to the bones of the Hilux as well.

Hilux bed removal

When Heath pulls the bed, you can see minimal, if any rust. A true rarity for ’80s Toyota trucks. And speaking of beds, this is were Heath’s dedication really comes through. The dude went with a full US-spec bed conversion.

He easily could have chosen to leave the perfectly good Hilux bed alone and no one would have held it against him. But instead, he elected to weld and refinish the bed to stay true to the film. That is some serious commitment to accuracy.

Paint Party

With everything stripped down, Heath preps the truck for its most eye-catching feature; the gloss black paint job.

Watching Heath move through the paint progressions is serious ASMR. So satisfying. And afterward, the truck is looking spectacular. It’s genuinely some of the shiniest paint you’ll ever see.

But the outside isn’t all that’s getting spruced up. While the seats are off getting reupholstered, Heath vinyl dyes the interior door panels along with converting nearly everything else to grey.

The Marty McFly truck stands out primarily because of its accessories. The 4×4 mirrors, Goodyear Wrangler tires with classic ’80s wheels, KC Daylighters, and roll bar all come together to shape an icon.

Raptor Liner

So Heath did his due diligence in assuring nothing was missing. On top of that, the truck even got a Raptor bed liner.

When the truck is finally revealed in all its glory, it’s something of a “Holy crap” moment. This truck is simply stunning. Well done Heath! Enjoy that trip to the lake, it’s well-deserved. Here’s the full video!
