4th gen front suspension TSB

Last week I was going over a speed bump and i heard a clank. I check my skid plate and it was o.k.

I took my truck in to toyota, but they were getting ready to close up. The service writer told me that the is a TSB out on the front suspension, because of clanking when going over a bumps.

I have an appt tomorrow to get checked out since they were closing up.

Has anyone else heard of such a TSB? Or has anyone else had this problem?

what kind of clanking? i just installed a new lift and have some clunking, but suspect it is just in need of some washers to tighten things up ... and i hadn't had any problems with clunking before now.

i haven't heard of this TSB, but am interested to hear more.

how long have you noticed your clanking?

I believe this is one of the original tsb's on the suspension making squeaking noises. I think all they did was lube up all the joints and the sounds went away. I'm pretty sure it wasn't replacing any parts so don't worry.

a clank similar to metal on metal hitting the front end of the skid plate.

Lance, do you have the TSB info?

you can probably do a search and find the original TSB over at toyota-4runner.org ... but what Lance is saying definitely rings a bell.

alldata.com has most (all?) of the TSBs, but I couldn't find anything that sounded like this. But if they are willing to fix it, go for it.

Could it have anything with your 20" Enkei's hitting the upper control arm during movement?

I heard the same exact thing from my truck this summer in a parking lot going over speed bumps. I also occasionally get a wishing sound from the steering column over rough roads. Wonder what this tsb is for??? Anyone have any details?

So, is there any type of safe grease we can apply to solve the problem that won't break down the rubber? Maybe a little Boeshield???

however, that TSB doesn't seem to exist in the techinfo.toyota.com TSB database for the 2004 4Runner ... so maybe your tech guy was confused, or maybe they extended the TSB to 2004s as well ... i dunno.

Awesome,

Thank you. I am going to take it in with me tomorrow, hopefully this is exactly the problem.

As for the enkei's. I have had them on for 7K miles now and just started getting the sound. I doubt it's the rims.

Just wanted to throw my $0.2 in here. My Runner has made a front suspension noise for the past 6 months or so. I posted here a while back on it. During my past 2 services at the dealer they have lubricated the suspension but no change in the noise. My noise is a little more specific or at least how I came to hear it. I haven't heard it over bumps that I hit straight on but rather when I am doing a turn and hit a bump or a driveway mid-turn. This sounds unusual but I have to do a three point turn to park everyday so I hear the noise often. It depends on my speed and angle into the bump but it does seem to be getting worse. I might be able to duplicate it just while making a left turn pretty soon. That will help because then I will be able to do it in the dealer parking lot pretty soon. Does anyone have experience duplicating issues with or at the dealer? Can you take a technician for a ride?

Thanks....

yeah, i think in most cases, you can ask to go with the technician. however, if your issue is the same as described in this TSB, then no amount of lubing it is going to help -- it sounds as though the TSB prescribes replacing the front suspension bumper with one of a different material.

They should be willing to go for a ride with you. I had to do that on my old Tacoma after they messed up the brakes after a service. The mechanic didn't see anything wrong until it was directly pointed out to him.

I think 95% of the time a tech has ridden with me. Just tell the service write when you pull in.

You should ask the technician to ride, most of the time we are glad to do it since it points to a specific noise rather than "normal noises." It's one of my biggest pet peeves as a technician when a customer complains to a service writer (who usually has no mechanic experiences at all) and to not get enough information from them. Make sure you tell the technician when, where, and how often it makes the noise; maybe even take it to where the specific problem occurs.

the TSB is only for 2003 4Runners. the TSB said Toyota corrected the problem during mid-production and changed the bumpstops to the new ones. so the later half of 03s and all 04s already have the new bumpstops.
