Ever loose your Firefox bookmarks?

Last June when I had to format due to a corrupt XP file, and I had to do the bookmark restore feature as outlined here.

This morning when I fired up Firefox it was a half window, and blank.
I started it backup in safemode, and my bookmarks were all gone.

Went to the above URL and tried a few things, and what brought them back again this time was the same as when I formatted.

I had to choose a backup file and rename it which can be found at the URL above, and also here below.

All my bookmarks are now back :bounce2:
I hope this is of help to anyone else.
How it got corrupt yesternight is beyond me.

If Firefox is closed unexpectedly due to a crash, a loss of power, or other unexpected event, the file where your bookmarks are stored can become corrupted, and your bookmarks may be unavailable in Firefox. If you lost your bookmarks within the last five days, you can restore them from the set of backups that Firefox maintains.

1. From the menu at the top of the Firefox window, select File and then select the Exit menu item.
2. Reboot your computer.
3. When the computer restarts, select the Start Menu in the Windows Taskbar. Then, select Run.
4. In the Run dialog, enter the following:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
5. Click OK.
6. A window displays all your Firefox profiles as a set of folders.
* Each Profile folder is named something like the following:
xxxxxxxx.<ProfileName>
where xxxxxxxx is an assortment of random letters or numerals
<ProfileName> corresponds to the name of the profile.
* For example, the folder containing the default profile is named xxxxxxxx.default.
7. Select the folder for your current profile.
8. In the profile folder, the file bookmarks.html stores your bookmarks and has become corrupted. Right-click this file, and select Rename....
9. Rename the file to a unique name, such as the following:
bookmarks_backup.html
10. Open the folder named bookmarkbackups.
11. In the bookmarks backup folder, you should see up to five files with names like the following
bookmarks-xxxx-xx-xx.html
where
xxxx-xx-xx corresponds to the date the backup was made.
12. You must copy one of these backups to the profile folder. Right-click the most recently dated backup. Select Copy.
13. Go back to the previous folder, which now contains the bookmarks_backup.html file.
14. Right-click in the white space of the folder. Select Paste.
15. Right click the file you just pasted (bookmarks-xxxx-xx-xx.html). Select Rename....
16. Rename the file to bookmarks.html
17. Restart Firefox. Your bookmarks should be available through the Bookmarks menu.

Frequently export them myself so no issues, but good to know.

you should look into foxmarks. it keeps them backed up and synced up so you don't have to do anything but redownload the extension and put in your password when you reinstall. I keep 4 computers all synced up.

OK, so I just got a new Dell Inspiron 17" laptop with Vista.
I already miss XP Pro

Found a page to import the bookmarks

However...in Vista I see my folder he talks about, but I do not see the app date folder.

It must be a permissions thing that is not showing me all files and folders.

In XP I can do it, but not sure how with Vista.
This OS is different than XP.

Fixed!
I know how to enable hidden files and folders in 95, 98, and XP, but not Vista.
Google brought up this, the setting is in the Control Panel for Vista.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.
3. Click on the Control Panel menu option.
4. When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:

If you are in the Classic View do the following:
1. Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
2. Click on the View tab.
3. Go to step 5.

If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:
1. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link .
2. Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
3. Go to step 5.

5. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
6. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
8. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
9. Now Windows Vista is configured to show all hidden files.

Conclusion
Now that you know how to see all hidden files on your computer, malicious programs such as viruses, spyware, and hijackers will no longer be able to hide their presence from you or people helping you.

Now I can get to the folder to put the bookmarks.html file in there.
Also you can open up your bookmarks in Firefox and choose import, and that will do it too.

This Vista is pretty cool, a lot of the stuff from XP is there, just in different places.

Ahhhh, you do it again, you do it again, destroyer!

Came home, booted up all three PCs, and no Internet.
Had to reboot the cable modem and routers.

Fired up Firefox and the bookmarks were gone.
Did the above fix which take less than a minute, and all is good.

Firefox had made a copy of my bookmarks about 5 PM yesternight.

I am not sure why this happens with Firefox, but it sure is good that they provide a built-in backup system for you.

It keeps about four or five backups, and you choose the latest date.
