I have HP's iPAQ Bluetooth Navigation. Works great - although mine needs a new battery... Uses Navteq Maps - nice package - turn by turn directions and all that jazz.

Bluetooth is just a wireless connection protocol made to be plug and play for low and med-bandwidth devices. Sort of competes with wireless USB (yet to come out). Lots of phones (like the RAZR I have) have built-in bluetooth so you can connect to a wireless handsfree set. When a car has Bluetooth, it usually means that the car's stereo can act as a bluetooth headset for your phone, so you don't have to hold it while you're driving. On computers, it can be used for lots of things, similar to plugging devices into your USB ports (of course, the device has to support Bluetooth to do it).
Eventually USB plugs will be completely replaced by Bluetooth and/or wireless USB devices. Just walk up to your computer and your Wireless USB disk will connect, etc, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_USB

same pda, i have a bluelogger from delorme. works great. especially good if you just want to record your trip, you dont need a computer, the bluelogger will record it internally and you can upload to a computer.
for road stuff i use igudance v3, its great! two sites that will help: www.aximsite.com www.mp3car.com (their gps forum section should help)

i've got the Axim x51v as well, and it is a really nice thing to have. i agree with you calrockx it would rock hard if it had phone capabilities. this thread comes at a great time since I'm looking into the different GPS options for it now.
is there much difference between the different BT GPS receivers? what features are useful/not worth it? are they all hard wired or battery powered? other pros/cons?

I have the Compaq iPaq 3635 (really old but still works fine for the basic stuff)
The Frist year I started to drive mom got Stepdad (who also has the same PDA as me) NAVMAN GPS It is an expansion pack that the iPAQ slides into... Great Service... We're please with ours.... Got maps for all ove rthe us and i believe some of britan on CD's... Kinda pic and choose which ones you need... I am going to be investing in a 4GB flash card (rare to find but worth it) So when I go on my corss coutry trip some time next year (New Mexico to see my Aunt) I will be able to get there without haveing to stop and load the new maps along the way... Ours seems easy enough to use and has never steered us wrong before...

I use the Pharos GPS that comes with Microsoft Streets and Trips, it has a usb cord that I use with my laptop while on the road and a compact flash adapter so the Pharos unit will work with my pda (Dell x51v), both work great but on the pda it is kind of a battery hog.
for longer walks from the truck as well as for kayaking I have a Garmin Etrex Legend C for its replaceable AA batteries as well as its water resistance. |
