FRS is FRS. Now whether they both have subchannels or not is a different story. Lets say you use channel 14-sub channel 14. If his only does regular channels then he can only hear you and not transmit to you. If you both have radios that don't do subchannels then you should be fine.

I would think there was a way to not use the subchannels, but I don't know.

Yeah, you don't have to use the sub channels. So, if you have sub channels and your buddy doesn't, just select channel X sub channel 0.

Like everyone else said, they will work fine, just make sure you "synchronize" your radios in the beginning What I mean is make sure that everyone is on channel X and sub channel 0. I can't tell you how many times some one will be on a different sub channel, and they can hear you but they can't talk, so you ask them if they are on the right channel, and they say of course but they aren’t and they just don't seem to get that they have to be on sub 0
