2001 4runner Speakers Cutting Out
I have a 2001 with factory CD/cassette/radio and seperate amp. About a week ago, the speakers started cutting in and out. Everything appears to be working except there is no sound coming out of the any of the speakers. It can be working fine one minute, then suddenly the speakers completely cut out. They may stay out for a few seconds or a few days. I pulled the HU to check the wiring harness connection and it looked good. Any ideas what else it could be? Thanks.

If there is any aftermarket work you've done to it then that is your problem (most likely) and there is probably a wire that either got loose somewhere or it is touching another one....basically, just go check all of the connections you've made. If you installed this by yourself you should know about where the problem could be coming from. If its not the wires and you are sure then it is possible the factory radio is malfunctioning or your amp isn't functioning either. Haha so i basically just told you what you already knew...go look for the problem...

It might be that the factory amp is going bad or even the head unit. The amp is located right below the head unit, you can't miss it...the harness leads you right to it. If you ever install an aftermarket unit, make sure you remove the amp and use the wire harness plugged into the amp, that is the harness you plugg in with your aftermarket harness so you don't have to cut or splice into the factory harness.

i've seen the outside mirror bolts loosen up and short out the tweeter wires behind them, causing the same symptom you are describing.
next time the stereo cuts out, give the sail panel a little tap and see if it comes back on.
