What all is needed (from 85 donor for SAS on a 91)?

I can get an 85 4 Runner with an auto and 4.30:1 gearing for cheap.... It doesn't run, no motor.... Also half the body pannels are missing (hood, grill, and both fenders) What I was wondering is, what all can I use for a SAS? Also what else would I need to aquire to sas a 91 4Runner w/Auto? Please don't answer with " If you have to ask you don't need a SAS!" I know I need spring hangers, shocks , shackles, hoops, flex lines and longer driveshafts, I'm wondering about the steering and such.... (Remember this is swaping these axles straight from the 85 to the 91, also I'm not too concerned with the rear as much as the front (other than gearing)) Thanks for any info.... Larry

Yes, but finding a complete list using stock parts there isn't.

steering, you could use, but its not worth it. junk it and buy hi-steer

axle, can be used but needs rebuilding.

i dont know what ratio is in your current diffs, so i cant help you there.

take the rear springs off and the front springs off. take the overload leaf off of the rear pack, and drill a new spring pin hole 1.5" behind the old one. put the very bottom leaf from the front pack under the rear pack. you now have a very nice, flexible front spring pack for your SAS.

Thanks for the reply Napoleon

The steering I wasn't sure about, that's why I asked... As for the gears I have 4.10:1, I only plan to run 33's (I know 4.30's aren't the best, but any thing is better than nothing, and I currently run 32's with the 4.10's) As for the springs, I was thinking along that idea and 63" Chevys in the rear (actually that's next on my list)...

So again thanks.... Larry

Actually, there are plenty of threads and informatoin about this. Search google, search here, Pirate4x4, 4x4wire, marlincrawler.com, mntoyx4.com, etc... This is a well documented swap and there are many, many parts lists available.

And the truth is, whether you like it or not, if you don't know what is needed, you're not ready to do the swap.

well, since you only have 4.10's you should pull the rear 3rd from the donor and put it into the rear of your truck (and install locker at the same time)

Sorry Chebby, I had a different title, but it was too long, and I was in a hurry.... So again sorry...

rockota - As we speak, as well as daily for about the past 3 weeks I've been searching through, here, pirate 4x4, 4 crawlers site, toyotaoffroad, and google is just about wore out. This is why I've asked the question, to pick the brains of the people who have done this... I've allready accumulated about 30 links to writeups and such, and a lot in notepad, an I am finally getting the blanks filled in, thanks to people answering this post.

- This is to keep the tread small so I don't have to wade through junk for the one important tidbit of information...

That is why I am looking for the information currently, so I'll be ready and have all the parts required befor I start.

There are complete kits offered by several manufacturers that list out all the components to do a SAS...such as Marlin and All-Pro Off-Road. Don't know of a much more complete list than those. All you need is a donor axle and a lot of that you'll need to replace or upgrade IMO.

Good luck.

All you want off it is the front axle... that is if you want to use a Toyota axle for the SAS.

T-case won't do you any good as it's off an auto, so it's a chain-drive case. And you have an auto... so you couldn't use a gear drive t-case anyways.

And you probably don't want the rear 4.30 as anything other than a spare since it probably wouldn't be good to put a 4cyl 3rd in the back of a v6 truck that you will presumably be wheeling pretty hard.

Hangers, shackles, u-bolts, bolts, etc. won't be useful either. You'll be using all new parts.
