Installing Safety Foam in Fuel Cell
Any advice?
I thought the RCI 2161A 15gal cell came with foam but somewhere in my decision between it and another RCI cell i mistaked it for coming with foam. It does not =( I want safety foam for the obvious reasons.
Curious how it installs, seems straight forward but should the blocks fit snug inside the cell? So in other words, order blocks that will fit together well within the cell so they dont move around. Is the whole cell filled with them or just a certain amount?
Seems the only sizes i can find on Summit Racing are:
6 in. x 4 in. x 14 in
6 in. x 3 in. x 16 in
8 in. x 8 in. x 4 in
Trying to fill an RCI 2161A 15gal cell,
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RCI-2161A/
Maybe the 6 x 3 x 16 would work. 3 pieces would fill about 25% of the cell in a perfect rectangle.
The sending unit is right in the middle of the cell so maybe chop the blocks in half and put half on one end, other half on the opposite side. Would this do the trick?
thx

Anyone had any experience with the foam breaking down quickly and clogging the fuel filter? How fast does this stuff break down? I've read that it can break down in a year then been reading on the racing forums of people who've had their cells since the early 90's with the original foam and the cell hasnt missed a day without fuel in it since. So... is there just a specific brand of foam vs something else thats not as durable?
Re: Fuel cell: Foam or No Foam?
First fuel cell. Full foam Fuel safe circle track cell. I ran that cell from 1989-2000 without any signs of the foam breaking down.
When I redid the car in 2000, I bought a summit drag cell, also full foam. The foam is still in good condition, and doesn't show signs of breaking down afer 8 years.
Basically, I don't know what what everyone is talking about.
What I did have problems with is the sending unit - I finally figured out A) how they work and B) what I have to do to fix the design. Now no problems.

Hmm might be going back to the dang drawing board on this one. But I guess the more square 15-20gal cells with sumps, sender and foam would probably be much better than the longer narrow 15gal cell without a sump or foam. Just makes mounting the other cell a little more difficult.

Everyone that i know thats used it has had problems with the foam breaking up in the fuel cell and clogging things up and then there motor quits. I would probably go without it, it's more for racing where you don't want drastic weight changes that effect the handling of the car going into the corners.

From what I understand about the foam is to keep the gasoline from sloshing around and potentionally exploding.
I've been at this model for hours now and I'm back to square one configuring the stock 17~gal tank into my truggy. Might be able to make it work, just will be a little more to install when the time comes .. Think Toyota coulda made their gas tank anymore awkward? LOL

Well, stock gas tanks use baffles to. hehe I'm not sure why fuel "cells" dont use baffles as well but there is probably a good safety reason I'm not aware of.
and ya i have no way to weld Aluminum. lol
Alls well I've been able to configure the stock tank into my truggy so saves me money and the headache. woot

is it really? lol i always though it was 80,000...i guess id better reread the cdl manual...atleast i still rebeber 53,000 pounds, and the important stuff like raise the landing gear and hook up the brakes...
besides baffles, there is something else similar to baffles i remember reading about, they use inside tankers also, i really cant remember but ill look it up

I was just researching this came across this thread. Does this help? http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/sho...r-a-fuel-cell?
I like the golf ball size wiffle ball idea. lol. But apparently there will be an access plate in the cell somewhere or you just stuff it in the filer neck hole to install, no need to tear apart the cell.
