I was checking out a thread on UltimateYota.com and saw a custom rear bumper with an integrated airtank. http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.ph...6&topic=111.30

I got to thinking...some people carry Jerry Cans on their rear bumper. Some SUVs/Trucks have the gas tanks mounted right behind the rear bumper. How practical, safe, and legal would it be to integrate a gas tank into a custom fabbed rear bumper?

doesn't sound safe to me at all, and as far as practicality i doubt you could fit more than a few gallons of fuel in it and where would you put the filler door, pump and all the other plumbing

i dont think that that would be legal, but check and make sure
also, if you get rear ended, the tank would probealy break, spilling gas all over, and maby caulsing an explosion

I believe a fuel tank located that far back is the reason they stopped making the Ford Pinto. That's not safe at all.

if you did that, i wouldnt use it for daily use. Maybe trail trips. Even then, you better make it strong enough to fend off the rocks. Then just empty it when you get back. Seems like WAAAY more work than it's worth.

Make a bumper into a cooler for holding your beer...much more practical

I don't think it would explode, but it IS a serious fire hazard. If you hit a rock and separate one of the welds or puncture it, it's gonna leak fuel all over the place.

My front bumper is fitted for air storage. Works pretty well.

are you sure, maby you should watch more tv, im almost positive that any car will explode anyways if it gets in a crash

yeah, a buddy of mine made his rear bumper hold air, he'd put a 100 or so PSI in it and use it when one of his tires got low
