Anyone need a job? - Water Pump
Just curious if anyone needs some work around here. I'd rather pay someone here than a shop-in-a-box. They always seems seem to find things to repair that don't need it. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/w.../#post51016143
Side Story: I once brought my wife's Jetta to a repair shop for some engine work. I had just replaced all the radiator hoses a few weeks before that with VW replacement parts so they have the VW logo on them. Since they had the logo on them the service guy told me they are originals and really need to be replaced. I told him that was nice and walked away.
Anyways, if anyone is up for it let me know.

So the repair shop wants to charge $950 to replace the timing belt w/kit (tension pulley camshaft somethingerother), water pump and coolant flush/add. says 3.7hours for the timing belt additional 2 for the water pump. I'm thinking it should only take 4 hours since you are doing the same removal work to get to both items. The water pump he has runs $189. They charge $80/hr.
He says the timing belt gave out. He isn't sure if it went out first then the water pump or vicaversa. This just what I wanted to start the new year off!

If you have a 22r or 22re engine. The water pump is easy. I did mine on my 22r in about 1 hr. And I got the water pump for 10 bucks (used) It would have cost maybe 35 bucks new. I think you should get a toyota book and do the work yourself.

According to the manual the total job was 5.7 hours. I have the 3.4L and you have to take the fan, fan shroud, belts, pulleys, ps pump, timing belt & cogs off just to get to the water pump.
I saw the bad parts. The timing belt was destroyed. The side with the teeth had melted and the rubber flowed into other voids and cooled that way. The tensioner pulley seal was melted away and the bearings were jammed into one end of the pulley. The water pump paddles were bent and scrapping against the walls of its enclosure. The mechanic told me I was the luckiest person he knows and I told him it's not lucky, it's a non-interference engine.
I just don't have to tools to do that kind of work.

This is my daily driver so I had to get it done ASAP. It ended up costing me $990!
I was hoping to find someone that wanted to help me do it for about the half the cost + beer or something. Oh well. I'll be sure to contact you the next time something catastrophic occurs. Thanks anyways!
